PRESIDENT - Laura Gutierrez

Hi, my name is Laura Gutierrez and I am a fourth year studying environmental engineering and doing research on aerosols at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

As President I aim to support my fellow board members and ensure the success of SHPE in empowering aspiring engineers.

I joined SHPE because I wanted to find a familia away from home. As President for SHPE at UC San Diego, I hope to help facilitate Latinx students through their journeys in STEM so that they can help build a diverse workforce.

VP EXTERNAL - Joshua Florez

I’m a third-year transfer Computer Engineering Major in Revelle College. My favorite thing to do is sleep.

I’m this year’s VP External. I’m basically our representative for professional contacts outside of UCSD. One of my biggest responsibilities is securing company sponsorships that will bring cool events and opportunities for our members.

I’ve been in SHPE for 2 years now and it’s been great. I love that I can give back and help people in our community, especially community college students and other transfer students. I also like that I’ve been able to meet so many nice people who motivate me to be successful.

VP INTERNAL - Jennifer Hernandez-Mora

Hello everyone,

My name is Jennifer, but you can call me Jen. I’m a third year, first-gen mechanical engineering student. I am from Santa Maria, CA, a small town in the central coast. I am super proud of my roots and am determined to be a great engineer in future who can give back to my community.

My own interests entail music, fashion, and aerospace. I love to breakdown music and particularly enjoy music history. I also am part of a space project team on campus, SEDS, where I get to work on a static fire rocket engine test stand and am also working on a rocket lander!

This year I am the Vice President-Internal, where I get to do a little of everything! You’ll likely see me on our Facebook page making announcements. I am also the TESC Representative for SHPE. Last, I get to assist our President in any tasks needed, and deal with a lot of behind the scenes logistics like record keeping and planning.

I am so excited to be on board this year, as I have been a part of the SHPE Familia since my freshman year. As a Latina in engineering, SHPE has provided me with an inclusive and welcoming space. Here, I am constantly supported and affirmed about my aspirations. I began as a member of the outreach and freshmen committees and found myself coming back to every event. We have lots of opportunities for everyone, so get involved!

VP FINANCE - Juan Gutierrez

Hi, my name is Juan Gutierrez, I'm a 4th-year mechanical engineer at UCSD with hopes of getting my Ph.D. in the near future. Most of my time is spent behind a computer but when I'm not sitting at one of my two desks, I go out and play tennis. I just recently built a new computer so I'm having fun with that for now.

I am this year's Vice-President Finance and it is my duty to provide our student chapter with as much funding as possible while also distributing the funds accordingly. I hope to be able to raise our budget from last year even throughout this pandemic.

I have been a part of SHPE since my freshman year and I wouldn't take any of it back. I have dedicated myself to this organization since I have enjoyed what we stand for. I hope to keep working hard to give back to this community since I have been lucky enough to benefit from it as well.

EMPOWER CHAIR - Angel Gonzalez

Hello everyone, my name is Angel Gonzalez, I’m a 4th year Structural Engineering student with a focus on Construction Management from Marshall College. I am first-generation student from the small border-town community of Calexico, California and Mexicali, Baja California. I love exploring new nature spots, painting, going to new dog beaches, surfing and playing soccer.

I am this year’s coordinator of our annual EMPOWER High School Conference that aims to motivate students from under-privileged backgrounds to pursue higher education. Those who attend the conference will have the opportunity to work in teams on hands-on activities and workshops, network with UCSD students and faculty, and learn about the many opportunities that a degree in STEM can lead them to do in the future.

This will be my 4th year involved with SHPE and I truly appreciate the UCSD SHPE Familia for all the memories and experiences we’ve had since my first day in college. Giving back to my community and especially EMPOWER means a lot to me because I participated in this event as a high school Senior and it motivated him to come to UCSD. So with your help, I will be doing my best to make this year’s conference truly special!

PUBLIC RELATIONS CHAIR - Lidia F. Vazquez

Hello,

My name is Lidia Fernanda Vazquez, I am a second year Bioengineering Biosystems student in Revelle College. I am a first generation student and come from Tijuana Baja California and San Diego. Apart from studying I enjoy painting, backpacking, photography and spending time with my family.

I take great pride in my multicultural roots that stem from being in a border town. I strive as the Publics Relations Chair to embed the vibrance and diversity that our SHPE Familia has in everything we do. As the Public Relations Chair, I am in charge of the digital platforms of SHPE at UC San Diego such as: the website, and social media accounts. I am also in charge of marketing and creating/curating the posters and designs we use for our many events.

It is such an honor to be part of the SHPE familia. I joined SHPE my first week of freshman year and since then I have fallen in love with this community. As a first generation Latina in STEAM the transition to higher education was challenging but I had an excellent support system here at SHPE. SHPE not only made me feel more at home but also provided many opportunities for me to flourish.

CO-ACADEMIC CHAIR - Benjamin Noriega

Hey y’all!!!! I’m Ben and I am one of the Academic Chairs along with Marco for SHPE 2020-2021. I am a third year Mechanical Engineering student from Marshall College. A little about me is that I love going outdoors, playing video games, watching movies/shows, food (all types basically but my favorite is Italian or Mexican), roller coasters (I love SIX FLAGS!), and I love to spend time with friends and family. I also love to watch and play a lot of sports! (specifically football, baseball, and basketball).

As Academic Chairs, Marco and I provide academic support to SHPE members. We will share info regarding help for classes, scholarship info, tutoring services, professional and career development opportunities, as well as gather info about graduate and doctorate programs students may be interested in. We also plan the Graduate Road Map event where members learn more about how different post-grad programs work as well as how students can afford and prepare for them. We are here for both academic and personal support. If you have any questions or just need someone to talk to we’re here!

SHPE means a lot to me. When first coming to UCSD as a freshman, I was a first generation Chicanx college student who didn’t know anyone. I had never seen a campus as big as UCSD. I was so scared and alone attending 400 sometimes 500 student classes where everyone seemed to be more prepared than me. SHPE provided that close-knit familia that I needed to really ground myself on campus. I have formed many friendships and connections through SHPE and have learned a lot about the resources on campus. Joining SHPE has really helped advance my academic, personal, and professional life for which I am very grateful for.

CO-ACADEMIC CHAIR - Marco Paredes

Hi! I am a second-year Electrical Engineering student at Sixth (Best) College. Outside of SHPE and academics, I love to play music on my guitar, cook interesting recipes, and drink a lot of coffee. Otherwise, if I'm not at school or doing any of the aforementioned activities, I'm probably in a spontaneous backpacking trip. Feel free to talk to me or ask me anything about San Diego, I was born and raised here! Also, you can ask me about any diet, I've been in all of them.

Position:

I am happy to be a co-academic chair alongside Ben in this year's SHPE board! Ben and I are responsible for making sure all individuals in SHPE are receiving enough academic support to do well. These include hosting workshops teaching members how to be organized, strengthen professional communication skills, and take care of mental health. We also offer individuals scholarships and graduate school resources.

What SHPE means to me:

At the beginning of my college experience, I became uneasy with my decision to study engineering. There was very little ethnic diversity in my major and I felt underrepresented. SHPE helped me find a comfortable place that I could belong to. I related to a lot of people and created strong friendships. It strengthened my identity as Latino and encouraged me to give back to my community.

CO-TECHNICAL CHAIR - Giselle Sanchez

Hello! I’m Giselle and I’m a fourth year Aerospace Engineering student in Muir College. I love dogs and ice cream, and I really enjoy being in the snow and going to the beach.

In SHPE, I am one of the Technical Chairs which are in charge of Project Teams and the annual hard-hackathon, REACh. We plan and coordinate along with our REACh committee to make sure the teams and companies get the most out of the 24 hours they spend together creating and building. I hope to have more technical workshops to expose students to hands-on training which can help them in their future engineering careers.

SHPE is one big familia that I’ve become a part of that truly cares about the success of their members and strives for each member to get the most out of their experiences. The support SHPE has offered me throughout my college career has molded me into the motivated engineering student I am today.

CO-TECHNICAL CHAIR - Jesse Garcia de Alva

Hi, I am Jesse! I am a third year Electrical Engineering major with a minor in Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Sixth College. While being a board member of SHPE, I am also involved in research in the medical field here at UCSD. In my spare time I love to longboard, play Dungeons and Dragon, and especially build anything and everything I can! From woodworking and leatherwork to prop making and embroidery, I love to make things with my hands!

My position here at SHPE is Co-Technical Chair. Through this position I help support students interested in our Project Teams and Workshops. Additionally I help facilitate the committee in charge of our 24 hour hard-hackathon, REACh. There are countless hours that go into making these events as amazing as possible and my co-chair and I love every minute of it!

SHPE, to me, is a tight knit network of like minded individuals who all want the best for one another. But really, our chapter here at UCSD is so much more than that. Everyone here is always happy to see one another and goes out of their way to help each other. Not only do I know that my familia here at SHPE will help me succeed academically and professionally, I know they will also help me thrive mentally and emotionally.

SHPE JR. REPRESENTATIVE - Milena Salazar

Hello! My name is Milena Salazar and I am a second year Structural Engineering Major. I joined SHPE last year because I was able to see the same passion I share about engineering and representation in the Hispanic community in this club. Outside of SHPE, I enjoy doing calligraphy, listening to music, and being part of various clubs across campus. I look forward to being on board for SHPE this year.

My position in SHPE is the SHPE Junior Representative. I will be leading the mentorSHPE program and the freshmen committee which is a support group for all freshmen. I will also be in charge of planning SHPE Jr. Chapter events such as Noche de Ingeniería.

SHPE to me means familia. I believe that SHPE truly captivates an inclusive and diverse community that challenges me to be a better individual. SHPE gives me the platform and opportunities to grow in my own professional development and passions while helping others grow in theirs.

GENERAL OUTREACH CHAIR - Xochilth Saldana

Hellooo! I am currently a fourth year mechanical engineering major from a tiny little town in Nor Cal.

This year, I am general outreach chair. I hope to continue expanding SHPE's outreach program with the communities in San Diego and the orphanages in Tijuana. I hope to establish more outreach partner(SHPE)s with companies and other diversity orgs around campus.

To me, SHPE represents a safe space for UCSD students to connect and grow with like-minded individuals. We are a FAMILIA

YOUTH OUTREACH CHAIR - Bethania Perez

Hi! I am a fourth year mechanical engineering major with a minor in business from warren college. I am really passionate about humanitarian and healthcare engineering. I am a first generation student from Pico Rivera, CA, a small city in Los Angeles County. My interests include hiking, soccer, watching every rom com on netflix, and visiting new places with friends.

I am this year's youth outreach chair. My responsibilities include coordinating logan elementary and memorial high school outreach events as well as looking for other schools to collaborate with. Last year I was general outreach chair. I am really passionate about spreading awareness of higher education and the available resources to help students get there within marginalized and under-resourced communities. Exposing this next generation of students to the different disciplines within STEM and letting them know that they are capable of so much is very important as not every student has a support system they can rely on.

To me, SHPE means having a community, a support system, and a familia away from home. I have created life-long friendships and memories through SHPE that I will be forever grateful for.
