5. EDLs: Edit Decision Lists

When the "Record shot timing" checkbox is checked, all transitions are logged in an EDL. The Edit Decision List will include all received switcher events in addition to shots taken manually.

  • The EDL should not be confused with the shot list, which is a ShotDriver document, even though they may contain much the same information. While it is possible to create a shot list and an EDL simultaneously from live events, it is assumed that most users will be using a pre-scripted shot list, where the live cut may differ slightly from the script.
  • Messages (entries in the shot list with a shot number zero) will not appear in the EDL.
  • The EDL is not saved with the script file, so it must be saved separately. We use the term "exporting the EDL file" because of the necessary step of translating the data into a standard format (CMX 3600) which can be used by video editing software.
  • The "Record shot timing" function records the time and duration of each shot in the shot list, in addition to creating EDL entries. If you disable "Record shot timing" and then later re-enable it, new events will add to the current EDL.
  • You may clear the current EDL without exporting, via the command in the File menu, or by using the button that appears at the lower left of the Export EDL window.

Exporting the EDL:

Each cut in an edit decision list has to refer to a video file for the source of the shot. Recordings of each camera's isolated video are generally named according to conventions that suit your post production process.

You can use the fields in the Export EDL window to construct your production's file naming convention, and the camera number for each shot in the list will be inserted into the "FROM CLIP" file name, to refer to each camera's ISO recording.

The fields and field labels you enter in the Export EDL window are saved globally (as with other preferences).
