Zack joined the Shogren Lab in the Fall of 2021 as a PhD student. Zack finished his BS in Marine Science and MS in Coastal Marine and Wetland Studies at Coastal Carolina University, where he worked on several water quality projects where he looked at trends in nutrients and fecal bacteria in coastal and river systems. Zack will be working on a project focusing on river biogeochemistry and the roles of particles in the system. He is excited to explore and learn about the new environment here in Alabama!
Andrew earned his B.Tech in Biology from the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Nigeria. In October 2023, he received his MSc in Water Resource Science from the Institute of Water Research, Rhodes University, South Africa. His research involved a manipulative field experiment to study the response of macroinvertebrates to artificially deployed macroplastics habitats in four headwater streams of Eastern Cape, South Africa. Andrew's current focus is on understanding how the dynamic hydrologic expansion and contraction of headwater networks impact carbon, nutrient, and material export to downstream systems. Outside of research, Andrew enjoys traveling, running, playing soccer, and hiking.
Jacob graduated with his BS in Interdisciplinary Studies from The University of Alabama and joined the lab in Summer 2023 as a master’s student. During his BS, he studied the impacts of environmental variation and anthropogenic disturbance on Alabama’s Gulf Coastal Plain forests since the 1820s. As an MS student, he is focusing on the influence of flow intermittency and other disturbances on ecosystem functioning and insect communities in headwater streams. Outside of research, you can often still find him hiking, snorkeling, and practicing archery.
Jackie graduated with her BS in Agricultural, Food, and Life Sciences from The University of Arkansas prior to joining the Shogren Lab in Fall 2024 to earn her MS. During her undergraduate, she studied the impacts of stream restoration on nutrient dynamics in an urban headwater stream. Now, in the Shogren lab, she focuses on the effects of drought and warming climate on stream nutrient dynamics in experimental mesocosms. Outside of the lab, she can be found hanging out by the creek, thrift shopping, or watching movies.
Nina graduated with her B.S. in Biology from Idaho State University and joined the Shogren lab in Fall 2024 as an M.S. student. During her B.S. she researched the distribution of a macrophyte and stream nutrient stoichiometry in Dr. Colden Baxter’s Stream Ecology Lab & Dr. Kathleen Lohse’s Biogeochemistry Lab and worked at the Idaho National Laboratory. As an M.S. student, she is studying the interactive effect of warming and drought on carbon processing and microbial communities. Outside of the lab, you can find her running, hiking, or dreaming about skiing.
Annabel graduated from the University of Florida with a B.S. in both Environmental Science and Soil, Water, and Ecosystem Sciences. Her undergraduate research background spanned from nutrient cycling in urban streams and stormwater ponds to greenhouse gas flux of a coastal salt marsh undergoing restoration. Annabel began her M.S. in the Shogren Lab in Fall 2024 where she is studying the effects of warming on stream ecosystem resistance and recovery from drought. Outside of her research, Annabel enjoys reading, running, and cooking.
