Shodor Honored at Business Excellence Awards
On September 9, 2010, Shodor was recognized with the Business Excellence Award for impacting the community - making Durham stronger, specifically within the non-profit category. The Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce presented the award at its Business Excellence Awards dinner held at the Hilton Hotel Durham near Duke University, with more than 230 business and community leaders present.
Shodor Honors Volunteers with Volunteer Service Award
On August 12, 2010, Shodor announced that two Shodor students, Ada and Gala Taylor, were awarded with the President's Volunteer Service Award, a national honor offered in recognition of volunteer service. Established in 2003, the Award is available on an annual basis to individuals, groups and families who have met or exceeded requirements for volunteer service and have demonstrated exemplary citizenship through volunteering. As one of thousands of certifying organizations participating in the Award program, Shodor confers the award to recognize the outstanding achievements of its volunteers.
Shodor Staff Awarded Best Paper at TeraGrid '10
On August 5, 2010, Shodor staff member Andrew Fitz Gibbon co-authored the paper Teaching High Performance Computing to Undergraduate Faculty and Undergraduate Students, which was awarded Best Paper in the Education, Outreach, and Training category at the TeraGrid '10 conference. TeraGrid is a scientific computing infrastructure that combines high performance computers, data resources and tools, and research facilities around the country. TeraGrid is the world's largest cyberinfrastructure for open scientific research.
Shodor Student Receives Student Leadership Award from North Carolina SMT Education Center
On April 17, 2010, Shodor intern Alex Revelle was awarded the Student Leadership Award in Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education by the North Carolina Science, Mathematics, and Technology (SMT) Education Center . This award not only publically recognized Alex's great work at Shodor, but also awarded Alex a $1000 scholarship to help him continue his education in the science, math, and technology field.
Shodor Intern Wins NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing
In 2010, Shodor intern Ada Taylor won the NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing. This national award honors high school females for computing-related achievements and interests. In addition to national recognition, Ada was awarded $500 in cash, a new laptop computer provided by Bank of America, a trip to attend the Bank of America Technology Showcase and Awards Ceremony in Charlotte, NC, and an engraved crystal award. Ada was selected for her skills in "computing and IT aptitude, leadership ability, academic history, and plans for post-secondary education."
