At SHIFT, students create their own schedules based on their interests. Teachers operate as facilitators of learning and are highly knowledgeable in their fields of study. Students can bring in questions as a foundation for inquiry and teachers help curate lessons based on their ideas. It is encouraged for students to share their learning in interactive ways to build their community stronger.
The school setting has been thoughtfully created to help foster student engagement in various subject areas. This includes:
Visible piping in the walls that shows the heat circulation in the building.
On-site rainwater collection and distribution throughout the property.
The community garden which hosts student-made daily meals.
Natural compost facility that helps fertilize the community garden.
An interactive forest where students can learn and play in their environment.
Solar panels, which generate 100% of the schools electricity.
Student-created art pieces that can be added to with the artists permission.
Rather than having a grades-based approach, SHIFT students receive their evaluation in an effective feedback loop model. Students complete self-assessment forms based on their own learning. Members of the community, including teachers, parents, and administrators, have one-on-one meetings with the students to discuss their self-evaluation and offer actionable advice focused on growth. Students conduct ad-hoc performance, written, or selected-response tests based on the content they learned, while also being suitable to their needs. This summative assessment is supplemented with ongoing formative assessment strategies so that the students can adjust their learning as needed.
