As a previously mentioned my research into the Sheppard Family tree has been plagued by the number of common names, particularly the common name of John Shepherd/Shephard. The are several John's in Wymeswold and they are also found in Walton on the Wolds, this means it has been hard to be 100% sure of the Sheppard tree as you go back in time. Although the first of a long line of John Shepherds, born in 1796 I am confident is correct, John is my 3rd Great Grandfather.
In the year 1796 the current Monarch is George III and the Prime Minister is William Pitt the Younger, member of the Tory party. On the 29th February ratifications of the Jay Treaty between Great Britain and the United States are officially exchanged. Britain vacates the forts it has been retaining in the Great Lakes region. In May Edward Jenner successfully administers the smallpox vaccine to James Phipps in Gloucestershire.
John Shephard was born in 1796 in Walton on the Wolds, Leicestershire. born to John & Hannah Shephard. He was baptised on the 9th February 1796 at Walton on the Wolds and the baptism record confirms his birth of the 31st January of that year. He met a Sarah Hill from Packington and they would later marry at the parish church Nottingham, 17th March 1834. their first two children are baptised before their marriage in 1834 under the Non-Conformist faith. Maybe they just didn't record the fact they were not married on the first children's baptisms or had they previously married under the Baptist faith ? , this may be the reason they married in a Nottingham parish church, away from their local patch but for sure after the first two baptisms under the Non-Conformist Baptist church they had a change of heart, returning to the main church. Later Census returns document her birth place and their children's marriage records proving her previous surname of Hill.
Sarah Hill was born in Packington in 1805. In 1805 the Ordnance Survey begins systematic publication of its General Survey of England and Wales, known as the Old Series maps. On the 4th June the first Trooping the Colour ceremony at the Horse Guards Parade in London takes place. The most famous event that year was undoubtedly the Battle of Trafalgar, held during the Napoleonic Wars. The British naval fleet led by Admiral Horatio Nelson defeated a combined French and Spanish fleet off the coast of Spain. Admiral Nelson was fatally shot on deck while commanding the fleet.
Sarah was baptised on the 3rd November 1805 in Packington, Leicestershire, her parents being John and Mary Hill.
In the 1800's John and his brother William are working adjacent farms on Brook Street Wymeswold. Probably farming together and sharing resources when needed. John's Son, another John is living and working for his Uncle William. William and John's sister Elizabeth also lived with William, working as a housekeeper. William & Elizabeth are both buried together in the same plot at St Mary's just opposite Church Farm.
In the Census returns of 1841 John Sheppard is living with Sarah and their children William, Joseph, Thomas and Ann at the farm on Brook Street, Wymeswold. There is one servant listed at the property, an Ann Hammond, aged just 14. John's Son John (born 1827) is noted as living on the adjacent farm with John's Brother William.
By the time of the Census of 1851. John Sheppard is aged 50 and listed as a Farmer of 60 acres, born in Walton on the Wolds. His Wife Sarah Sheppard is now aged 44, a Farmers Wife born in Packington. Also living there are their children, Sons William, Joseph, Thomas and George, all listed as Scholars. Also there is a young Daughter called Martha, aged 5, also noted as a Scholar. All the children were born in Wymeswold. His Son John is still living and working on the next farm with his Uncle William.
Farming was a tough and precarious profession. For some farmers a wet season and a bad harvest in Victorian times could mean the workhouse and before that starvation. Generally life was tough in other ways too. One newspaper article in 1854 reported on the Brothers John and William, Farmers from Wymeswold being involved in a fight on the way back from Hoton and they were in court accused of assault and violently beating a James Cosgrove when he was blocking the road. John was on the pony & waggon and William on horseback, when James wouldn't move his dog carriage William used his whip and then fists while John held him by the collar. According to one witness James Cosgrove became saucy and produced a knife at one point after being asked to move. The bench took a very dim view of the proceedings and fined them all 20s and costs or face one month in gaol.
In the 1861 Census John is listed as a Farmer of 190 Acres and now employs two labourers. Their property is now noted as Wymeswold Lodge, Brook Street, Wymeswold. Also there is his Wife Sarah Shepherd, Sons William (Stock Tender), Joseph (Draper) and George (Ploughman). Also Daughter Martha (Scholar) and Son Thomas (Farmers man) and his new wife Sarah (Dressmaker). Wymeswold Lodge is one of the original farms that sprang up when the open field system was replaced by the Enclosure Act, the parish of Wymeswold or Wimeswold was enclosed in 1759. Wymeswold Lodge is still farmed today.
John passed away on the 25th June 1868, aged 72 and Sarah Sheppard died on the 14th April 1869, aged 62 , these are both confirmed by a note in the Family Bible.
