In this project, I first took the "AM I ADDICTED TO SOCIAL MEDIA"? quiz and included the results I got and reflected on them. Then I found an interesting statistic regarding social media with a reflection on the statistic. Then finally I explained my opinion on how social media is impacting society.
I completed the "AM I ADDICTED TO SOCIAL MEDIA"? Quiz, this quiz made me realize I use social media a little to much. The results after the quiz stated,
You're fairly reliant on social media, but there are far worse culprits! Still, it's good to be reminded that UK adults spend an average of 8 hrs 41 mins on screens every day, and 4 hours of that on smartphone apps alone (mainly social media). That's about a third of each day checking apps. Do you need to rethink your social media habits and the amount of time you spend scrolling?
I definitely need to think and reflect on how much time I spend on social media. It is huge part of my everyday life and needs to change. Each day I spend about 4 hours on social media sites. I am going to challenge myself this month to only spend two hours each day on social media sites.
The most interesting statistic from the Pew Research Articles was how parents are more likely to be concerned about their teen seeing explicit content on social media than sites leading to anxiety, depression and even lower self-esteem. I chose this stat because as a child and young teen my parents were definitely more worried about me seeing explicit content than worrying about me getting depressed or having lower self esteem from things I saw on social media. It shocked me because I realized times have changed and depression and lower self esteem being caused by social media needs to be taken more seriously. This stat relates to me because as a child and teen my parents worried about the explicit content that I could see.
In my opinion, social medias impact on society definitely has more positives than negatives. It has created a whole new way of communication, interaction, and expression. Social media apps allow for companies and businesses to advertise themselves to make more money and create a bigger following. Social media also allows for us to build our personal profile and how people view us. It is also a huge way to stay in contact with your family and friends on a daily basis from post and story's on apps. Some negatives are you can hide your true identity from social media and act like a person your really not which can cause depression or low self-esteem. There is also a lot of misinformation spread all over social media that effects the society negatively. Overall, I think there are a lot more positives than negatives with social medias impact on society.
I learned that I spend way to much of my time on social media sites daily. It is starting to impact my free time when I should be completing school work or practicing for baseball. I learned my usage of social media is pretty equal to my peers. I also learned social media causes many people to have, anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. To add on social media can be great but also very bad for us.
