About SHeeks [ʃíːks]

PROFILE

SHeeks is a shakuhachi ensemble group formed in 2018.

The group is comprised of the alumni of the traditional Japanese music club in Tohoku university, Japan.

The group name “SHeeks” is a coined word made of the words “shakuhachi” and “geeks”.

We Love Shakuhachi. We Are Geeks.

SHAKUHACHI

Shakuhachi is a bamboo flute with five or more than five holes; very basic type is the one with five holes.

It is one of the air-reed instruments: a player places the end of bamboo tube on the chin, under the lips, and then blow across the edge.

Various sounds and tones can be produced, depending on how the holes are closed and how they breathe.
