At SJS we are building an integrated pK-12, hands-on, project-based learning curriculum that is based on the Massachusetts Science and Technology/Engineering (STE) Frameworks and Standards promulgated in 2016 and revised in 2022 by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. These standards are consistent with those used by the archdiocese.
We are working with Science directors at Malden Catholic and other schools to ensure that students leave SJS prepared to succeed with the most rigorous high school science courses.
Each grade will address topics in Physical, Life, and Earth Science and Technology/Engineering. 4th grade will focus on Matter & Energy; 5th on Connections & Relationships in Systems; 6th on Structure & Function; 7th on Systems & Cycles; and 8th on Cause & Effect.
In all grades 4-8, We introduce the scientific method as a major topic. This topic is covered at the beginning of the year. Using the scientific method as a guide, students will learn to identify areas of interest, conduct preliminary research, develop alternatives, conduct experiments, analyze data, and share conclusions and insight in a written report.
As part of the class, students will complete a number of reports throughout the year. The SJS Lab Report Format and sample are provided here.
Science grades are based on three equally weighted components: Projects including labs; Assessments--tests and quizzes; and Contribution to the class.
Projects are usually graded with a rubric that delineates required components of the work.
For example, does a lab report include all of the necessary components presented correctly?
This will be a check-off sheet for completeness. Success is not required; effort is!
Assessments can be verbal, written, or hands-on practical. All will be scored as a percentage.
Middle School content tests are given online using JogNog.com.
4th & 5th grade written tests will be given in class.
Contribution is my non-negotiable assessment of whether students meet my expectations on a weekly basis. This includes completion of class work and homework.
Number-Letter grade equivalents are described in Renweb/Facts and are consistent with those of the District.
