Judith believes hope and healing are possible for everyone and that each person has their own unique healing journey.  As a therapist, Judith listens to the needs and desires of her clients and helps them reach their personal goals and potential.  She's founded her own non-profit Share Hope through Art, is a former trainer of foster parents, a public speaker, writer and author on suicide prevention and breaking the stigma around mental and behavioral health.  Judith believes peace in your mind and heart is achievable when you are willing to do the interpersonal work.  She also specializes in creating memorial keespake art to help on individuals' grief-healing journeys, as well as legacy art with clients with terminal illness or end of life to help their loved ones.  She uses an eclectic approach based on the desires of her clients and specializes in narrative and art therapy and enjoys imparting educational tools via CBT, DBT, ACT, and more treatment models.

Confidentiality Rules- we practice confidentiality completely outside our agency unless an informed consent signed by you to assist another provider to treat you; with the exception of 2 rules.

1. Therapists are mandated reporters for Child Physical & Sexual Abuse.  If you give me identifying information, I will have to make a CPS report.

2. I need you alive to help you.  I need to make sure you are safe to leave the office. If you are in imminent danger to yourself or others, we have to break the confidentiality rule by contacting an agency that can help all stay safe.

*If I see you in public, I will act like I don’t know you.  If we happen to know the same people, they will never know you are my client unless you tell them.

Layout of the Program for Ongoing Maryland Clients

• Individual sessions can range from 30- 50 minutes. I prefer 50 minutes but if only available for lunch break, we can still meet.

• 1st & 2nd Session focus on the initial assessment, background research, collecting the required information that helps in the treatment.

• The 2nd and 3rd session focus on creating your Service Plan: discovering your goals and discuss potential interventions to assist in empowering you to reach them.

• The following sessions are personalized to you.

• I can also see Springboard clients on a different day than their normal therapy or psychiatry session(s) to do Memorial Art Therapy, which can be used to supplement regular treatment.  I can help local clients adjust to their life after the loss of their loved one (s) and includes ongoing therapy sessions to help on your healing journey. 

Longterm Vision: Layout of the Memorial Art Program for One Week Designed for Out-of- State Clients

• This is for clients who may be in regular grief therapy and/or are struggling with loss where it is having a negative impact on their life. The clients may be recommended to come to treatment for a week. You can make a vacation out of the trip and have daily morning sessions so days can be filled with local adventures.  Ideally this is a supplement on your healing journey and ongoing support you have in your own community. 

• The intake will be unique with prospective client and therapist communicating prior to session on creating the service plan (projects) and gathering information to complete the initial assessment via email. Clinician needs one client in the family to proceed and can do individual and/ or family (those who client states are family and friends are fine). 

• Projects may include: a Celebration of Life book, painting a rock to keep, creating cards, bookmarks, ornaments, buttons, designing a t-shirt, and other ideas can be used as well.  Clinician hopes to book months in advance and can help with fun things to do if making a trip.  Clinician can only practice in Maryland, but people from any state who have Medical Assistance, BlueCross BlueShield, and can check on other insurances.

Clinician’s Model' Using Scientic Method

I see therapy as following the well-known Scientific Method.

1. Problem/ Purpose of being in therapy/ goals:

1. Where do you want to be in your life? How do you want to feel?

2. What’s problems are hindering you from achieving the first question?

2. Research: Assessment & Brainstorming on best practices (list and links will be added on here for potential wellness tools etc.)

3. What Hypothesis: What can you and I do to help treat the “problem” to help you reach your life goals?

4. Experiment. Let’s create a plan together. Let’s test our hypothesis. Try new things.

5. Analyze. Let’s keep seeing if the plan is working, continual feedback. We continually analyze and see if our plan is working, make needed adjustments to the plan/ treatment. At times assessments may be used to track progress.

6. Report. By 6 months we see if our Service Plan needs to be adjusted. We may need to

A.     Create a different treatment plan if goals not reached.  Many may have to try many different methods, tools, to find the ones that work. 

B.     Conclusion. You may have the tools and insights to reduce services or stop them. Create a wellness plan before terminating services to maintain wellness and help prevent relapse of negative feelings, thoughts, or behaviors and a plan includes positive to steps to take in one's journey.

Clinician Outlook on Life/ Potential Bias

Every Clinician has their own outlook on life and their personal bias and mine is I believe each person matters and is important. I embrace Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Blueprint. "I want to suggest some of the things that should begin your life’s blueprint. 

#1 Number one in your life’s blueprint, should be a deep belief in your own dignity, your worth and your own somebodiness. Don’t allow anybody to make you feel that you’re nobody. Always feel that you count. Always feel that you have worth, and always feel that your life has ultimate significance.

#2 Secondly, in your life’s blueprint you must have as the basic principle the determination to achieve excellence in your various fields of endeavor. You’re going to be deciding as the days, as the years unfold what you will do in life — what your life’s work will be. Set out to do it well." 

*I share my story publicly, on stage, in articles, books, but in therapy it is 100% about client. I believe in recovery, peace after the storms of suicidal thoughts, because it is possible and know it on a personal level.  I hope my belief in you is felt in therapy.  I set out to help my clients and humanity to the best of my abilities. 

Brainstorming on Ways to Get and Feel Well

Below is an incomplete list of different forms of therapy and wellness tools. It started during my Mental Health First Aid Course via asking a question and taking notes from the rest of the class.  Including this list here is because you should ALWAYS have HOPE and keep going!!!  Many have heard that they may need to try a couple medications to get one that works, similarly there are many wellness tools and therapeutic methods where one may help, and one may not.   Patience and perseverance are the key to recovery. 

•Check for medical/ biological causes (Vitamin deficiencies, etc) to rule out underlying cause.

•Narrative Therapy/ journaling- You can daily write down the positive steps you take, food you eat, track anxiety/ wellness tools. Work with a therapist on those negative thoughts and steps to take to help prevent.

This can also be allowing you to simply talk without interrupting. There can be a time for a therapist to listen.  There can be a time to teach psychoeducational information and utilize CBT or use Motivational Interviewing/ Socratic Questioning. The can be time for reflection, learning, even homework.  Each person is unique but listening to listen not to respond is an art that is not appreciated or used by all therapists, but I embrace.  There can be time for silence to provide time to process information and not give your automatic response.  People are often in therapy to heal and healing may take work, silence, processing, thinking, learning more information.   

•Storytelling- some therapists when a client is stating they are lacking hope can share stories of other people, often famous who have been in their shoes.   This is not for everyone, but is a great tool to have knowledge and use as clinically appropriate. 

•Laughing for some people can boost mental wellness, boost mood instantly, stop racing thoughts. This may not help all, but for some a wellness tool used daily. (Don't try while eating to prevent choking).

John Gray's "Love Letter" Technique Grey's "love letter" technique has five stages:

1. Anger.  After a sentence or two explaining the nature and intent of the letter, the writer communicates his or her feelings of anger, resentment and blame at the other person.  It basically involves variations of the sentiment "I don't like it when you....." 

2. Hurt and Sadness. In the second section of the letter, the writer describes any feelings of sadness, hurt or disappointment that are present.  "I get sad when you...." is one example of a typical second-section sentence.

3. Fear.  This next section lists fears and insecurities that the writer feels, as in "I get scared when you....."

4. Guilt and Remorse. In this section the writer shares any feelings of responsibility, regret and remorse that are present.  "I'm sorry that I....." or "I regret...." are typical examples of ways to begin a sentence in this section.

5. Love. The last section of the letter is the appropriate place for the writer to describe feelings of love, forgiveness and understanding.  "I forgive you for....." or "I really care about you and want to work this out" are good examples.  The end of the letter is also the place to state a simple request or desire for an action on the part of the reader.  "I would like you to....."
