Samantha Fairchild

I am currently a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Emmy Noether Group at the University of Osnabrück, hosted by the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences (MPI MiS).

Starting January 2023 I will still be at MPI MiS, but hosted through third party funding from the Walter Benjamin Program.

I received my PhD in mathematics from the University of Washington in June 2021, advised by Jayadev Athreya.

  • Counting, pictures, dynamical systems, and collaborations make research fun!

  • Mathematics is ultimately about problem solving, so through a mixture of lecturing and active learning techniques (such as worksheets and group work), I strive to help my students gain independence and confidence in their problem solving skills.

  • Mentoring undergraduate reading projects and research projects is one of my favorite ways to engage with students of math.

I share in Federico Ardila-Mantilla's axioms:

  1. Mathematical talent is distributed equally among different groups, irrespective of geographic, demographic, and economic boundaries.

  2. Everyone can have joyful, meaningful, and empowering mathematical experiences.

  3. Mathematics is a powerful, malleable tool that can be shaped and used differently by various communities to serve their needs.

  4. Every student deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.
