Here are all of the errors on the original PlayStation.
Here are all of the errors on the original PlayStation.
Error: The startup will occur like normal, then it cuts to a blue screen with blue spheres. Text reading "Please insert PlayStation CD-ROM." then appears.
Technique: Just the text appearing.
Avaliability: Seen if the PlayStation cannot recognize the inserted disc.
Error: The startup will occur like normal, but then instead of showing the PlayStation logo, it shows the Sony logo, the PlayStation wordmark, and SCEA, SCEE, or SCEI.
Variants:
Sometimes there's no Sony logo, and with two Xs below.
There's another version by inserting the disc when the console is in the main menu. After the disc has been loaded, the SONY logo is replaced with "MAIN MENUY" (on models with blue main menu) or "+ONY" (on models with white checkerboard menu).
Technique: Just the text fading in.
Avaliability: Seen when the user inserts a foreign disc on a modchipped PlayStation (usually a PC disc).
Error: The startup will occur like normal, however, as the console reads the invalid disk, the screen will stay on the Sony logo for longer than usual, until the screen changes to black with the PlayStation logo missing and the other visual elements staying on the screen, often glitched with parts missing. The 'PlayStation' text also fades in much slower than usual. The "whoosh" sound normally heard on this screen will be much louder. After 60 seconds or less, a slowed down version of the startup chimes will play for a while before more chimes begin to play at faster and slower speeds, as the console would attempt to read the disc. Eventually, the music will stop, and the console will either go to the game when the data is found or freeze when not, upon attempting to execute the loaded 'game data' all at once.
Variants:
Visuals could be different everytime.
There's a version nicknamed "Callous Venture" similar to the sound that plays upon fading into the black screen, but without the chimes, as it plays slowly during the Fearful Harmony phase later on.
Technique: Just the PlayStation text fading in.
Avaliability: Seen whenever the user inserts a damaged or non-PlayStation disk into a console modchipped to bypass copy-protection. It can also be triggered on an unmodded console by disk-swapping. This error only occurs on SCPH-100x and SCPH-5xxx models.
Error: The startup will occur like normal, but you will get a black/grey screen along with a much more jarring version of the PlayStation sound. The synthesized whoosh comes in looped (causing the whoosh to sound more heavy) and the chime sound and the five synth-flute notes are replaced with a slightly different synth-flute note sequence that is higher-pitched (this is actually the same chime sound as normal except sped up slightly).
Variants:
Sometimes, a white bar can be seen scrolling from bottom to top.
On rarer occasions, the PlayStation logo can be seen.
Technique: None.
Avaliability: Seen when the user inserts an unreadable PSX game or when the PS1's BIOS is being corrupted.
Error: The startup will occur like normal, but it suddenly changes to tiles of squares fading from white to red to the right. Text saying "Please insert PlayStation format disc" then appears.
Technique: Just the text appearing.
Avaliability: Seen if the PlayStation cannot recognize the inserted disc. This error only appears on the SCPH-10x model.
Error: The startup will occur like normal, but it suddenly changes to tiles of squares, with a square with the PlayStation logo with a disc on the right, a purple square with a PS1 console with a light (which is the console's reset button) flashing, and a red arrow with the text "INSERT DISC.".
Technique: Just the light (reset button) on the PS1 console flashing.
Avaliability: This occurs on older PAL region consoles (SCPH-1002 through SCPH-5552, unmodded) when an unrecognized disc is inserted into the console.
Error: On a black background, we see a "no" sign with text saying "SOFTWARE TERMINATED", "CONSOLE MAY HAVE BEEN MODIFIED" and "CALL 1-888-780-7690".
Variants:
Japanese releases have different text saying "強制終了しました。本体が改造されている おそれがあります。(Forced termination. The main unit may have been modified.)".
Early Japanese releases simply featured a red hand sign with no text.
Technique: None.
Avaliability: This error occurs while loading a game in a modchipped PlayStation (only on games released from 1998 onward).
Error: TBA.
Variants: These error screens may vary depending on the game (some games doesn't have this screen)
Technique: None.
Avaliability: This error can be caused on modded consoles by disc swapping or ejecting the disc while a game is running. It can also occur on unmodded consoles, if the console's laser is faulty.
