BETTER Model

The BETTER model was developed for nurses to address topics concerning sexuality and sexual activity with patients (Mick, Hughes, & Cohen, 2004). This model can be adapted for other healthcare professionals as well.

B: Bring up intimacy and sexual activity issues

E: Explain that sexuality is a part of everyday life and is a quality of life issue that can be addressed in occupational therapy

T: Tell clients you are able to offer information and resources to address sexuality and sexual activity concerns.

T: Timing is important. Be sure that you bring up these issues in a private area. It may be best to bring it up along with other private matters, such as toileting or showering, to normalize the discussion.

E: Educate the clients about how their specific diagnosis may impact sexual functioning.

R: Record some notes about symptoms or deficits that may impact sexual functioning, as well as any information provided by the client regarding these issues.
