A commitment to SEWA or Social and Environmental Welfare and Action is an integral and all pervasive spirit that permeates every grain of our culture and learning at NiBS. Every year, a new SEWA commitment is launched and introduced to the students on Children’s Day. Students across the school pledge themselves to the new commitment and intensively work on projects and activities related to it for the duration of an entire year. Some of the SEWA themes we’ve worked upon in the past include a partnership with Digantar – an alternative school for rural children, A Breath of Fresh Air responding to Delhi’s air pollution crisis and K’no’w your Plastic – a theme that looks at sustainable alternatives to plastic.
In the case of the Annual Shiksha theme, since a project is taken up for an extended period of time, it enables deep enquiry and exploration, allows students to experience a genuine sense of achievement from having seen a project through to completion, and equally, allows them to learn from their failures too. Most importantly, students learn that little change or impact is possible unless the initial zeal and the excitement of good intentions is translated into a commitment of long term dedication and perseverance.
NiBS entered into a collaborative partnership with Digantar, an alternative school near Jaipur based on our similar philosophy and vision, our commitment to the community and our teaching approach in the class. All students from Ankur to Class XII planned and worked hard on specific Class projects for their friends in Digantar to help them experience the joy of learning and sharing, of caring and belonging and receiving and giving.
Our Project ‘A Breath of Fresh Air’ which was launched on 14th November, 2017 came into being as a result of the worst smog in Delhi for the last two decades.
The decline in the air quality was so severe and hazardous that the Indian Medical Association had to declare a public health emergency and requested schools to shut down. Through this SEWA project we plan to take small but strong action oriented steps to reclaim our fundamental right to clean air for our children and our community.
The SEWA project focused on creating awareness of the harmful effects of single use plastic goods and what could be done to reduce their usage. Ankur and Pallav: took up the task of converting ‘Trash to Treasure’
-classes one and two shared their learnings on the theme in their societies and playschools in Dwarka, and encouraged others to take the pledge to reduce the use of single use of plastic objects. III and IV created vertical gardens and made Eco bricks. The senior school students conducted a school audit and have worked on some well-defined norms for the School in an effort to reduce our plastic footprint and also reached out to other schools and organizations with a view to encouraging e - waste segregation and disposal.
The world changed for all of us and isolated in our homes, we needed to reach out, connect and work towards a better future. It is the sheer courage and power of our SMILE flock’s collaborative journey that inspired us to dream of and design the ‘Be the Change’ inter-school projects. It was our firm belief that as our schools partnered with others across latitudes and longitudes, from New Delhi to Chennai, Bareilly, Kottayam, Nadakkavu, Lucknow, Ladakh, Bangalore and Ajman, and worked together in UNITY, we were able to unleash in full measure, the miraculous Power of CommUNITY.
A community art project in collaboration with DMRC and St+art India Foundation under the guidance of renowned Warli artists, the Vayeda Brothers. The project aimed at spreading awareness about how public art can make a powerful statement for our community, foster community pride and a sense of belonging and at the same time enhance the quality of life for its residents and visitors.
Through this project we reached out to the community to create better and beautiful spaces in our neighbourhood and are working towards painting murals at the Dwarka Sector 14 metro station.
