Mitchell E. Kirwan, Ph.D.

Dr. Mitchell Kirwan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at UTEP. He completed Postdoctoral training at Arizona State University, earned his Ph.D. from Oakland University, and earned his Bachelor of Science from the University of Michigan.
His research focuses on the ways that sexual violence is associated with emotion regulation, alcohol intoxication, hostile masculine attitudes, minority stress, LGBTQ+ identification, and impulsivity. For example, he recently published his research demonstrating that specific profiles of in-the-moment emotion regulation were predictive of individual’s intentions to perpetrate (or not perpetrate) sexual violence. Dr. Kirwan has provided guidance to more than 20 undergraduate and graduate students, supporting them in publishing their research findings and engaging in professional presentations.
