Welcome to the official webpage of the Sexual Violence and Emotion Regulation (SEVER) Lab! My name is Dr. Mitchell Kirwan.
My research focuses primarily on the underlying and in-the-moment factors associated with sexual violence perpetration and sexual violence victimization, most notably: emotion regulation, alcohol use and intoxication, LGBTQ+ identification, hostile masculine attitudes, and impulsivity. By conducting this research, I hope to better understand the factors that facilitate sexual violence, allowing me to aid in the development of future prevention and intervention programs. These programs would seek to reduce the prevalence of sexual violence perpetration and reduce the severity of the negative consequences experienced by sexual violence survivors.
