Goal: Provide comprehensive, individualized interventions for students with persistent, high-intensity behaviors.
Conduct Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBA)
Develop and implement Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs)
Provide 1:1 support or wraparound services (counseling, mental health referrals)
implement crisis/ safety plans
Use individualized SEL instruction, therapy, and academic/ behavioral supports
Useful Strategies for Specific Behaviors:
Aggression
Goal- Address chronic, high-intensity behaviors with individualized, wraparound plans
Strategy- Conduct an FBA to identify what triggers the aggression (e.g., peer conflict, adult redirection). Then implement a behavioral plan that includes proactive/ preventative strategies.
Example- Student has access to a "cool-down space" with an adult present. Aggressive behaviors result in a reset, not just discipline.
Defiance
Goal- Understand the root cause and create individualized supports.
Strategy- Conduct an FBA which will identify that noncompliance may be escape motivated or attention seeking.
Example- Instead of immediately demanding compliance, staff uses a countdown or choice: "You can start now or in two minutes- you choose."
Impulsivity
Goal- Provide specialized, individualized support with accommodations.
Strategies- Implement a 504 plan or an IEP which may include alternative work settings, behavior support, extended time, or reduced distractions.
Example- Student works in a quiet "focus zone" with noise-cancelling headphones and a task checklist. Additionally, student gets movement breaks every 30 minutes.
