Hemmant station opened in 1914. On 15 October 1983, the line was electrified through the station from Park Road to Thorneside.
Hemmant station was named after the homonymous suburb of Hemmant which was named after William Hemmant who was a local parliamentarian from 1871 to 1876.
Hemmant station has two platforms consisting of an island platform. Platform 1 is for outbound services and platform 2 is for inbound services.
