Banyo station opened in 1882 as Clapham Junction as it was expected to be the junction of the North Coast line which it was later decided in 1897 that the junction would be at Northgate station so it was renamed Banyo after the word from the local Turrabul Indigenous word meaning ridge. The line was duplicated in 1901 and it was electrified on 18 September 1982. On 14 September 2012, a semi-trailer became stuck on the level crossing and was struck by a northbound train causing it to be thrown into a southbound service disturbing train services on the line most of the day. No one was seriously injured.
The station itself consists of two side platforms. Platform 1 is used for inbound services and platform 2 is used for outbound services.
Banyo station has four entrances. One for each platform at the level crossing one to platform 1 from Royal Parade and one to platform 2 from the intersection of St Vincents Road and Tufnell Road.
Banyo does have disability access however assistance is required due to the level crossing.
