All high school debate teams rely on parents and guardians to volunteer as practice supervisors, tournament chaperones and debate judges. Please follow these easy steps below to do your part to support our team and your child.

Please sign up to volunteer at least two times during the school year. Select the practice dates and/or tournaments that work best for you. Click here to be directed to our online signup sheet.

All academic volunteers at Sequoia work with ATLAS (Sequoia's academic volunteer department) to make sure that volunteering is a safe, fun and rewarding experience for everyone involved. To that end, ATLAS will ask you to complete a little paperwork so that we can get you into our high school district's system of volunteers who are "cleared" to work with Sequoia students. Volunteer clearance allows you to participate in all kinds of cool activities school-wide-- and will last you throughout your years at Sequoia. Level 2 volunteers will be cleared to be alone with students (without a staff member present) either at school or during tournaments. If you will be driving students, you need Level 3 "driving" clearance, the highest form of clearance in our district.

ATLAS makes sure that all your paperwork is handled carefully and confidentially. Please note: Volunteer clearance can take up to 30 days to complete... but with your quick help, we can make it happen much, much sooner.

To initiate the clearance process, please send an email to elisa@atlashs.org right away indicating your interest in volunteering for the debate team.

ATLAS will then respond to your email asking you to complete 6 steps as soon as possible. Please wait for this email as it will include very specific instructions about how to:

1. Complete an on-line "Volunteer Application" form.
2. Email ATLAS the following four items, preferably attached to one email:

• A photo or scan of the front side of your Driver's License. The district uses this and the Volunteer Application to conduct a background check with the county's Sheriff's department.
• A clear photo or scan of the school district's Personal Vehicle Use Form.
• A clear photo or scan of the school district's Personal Vehicle Use Form.

1. Fill out the school district's DMV Release Form.
2. Email ATLAS a photo or scan of your Driver’s Insurance Policy.
3. Get fingerprinted across the street from school. When ATLAS has all the above documents (steps 1-5) they will send via snail mail (or hand deliver to your home) the Livescan form you need to get fingerprinted. Your fingerprinting is the final step to complete clearance. The Livescan form gives the fingerprinting staff the info they need and also serves as payment for the service so that you incur no costs. ATLAS cannot accept fingerprinting from any other location or organization, only this one where we have our DOJ/FBI account, so please plan accordingly.

We really appreciate your help completing this paperwork as soon as possible. We know how busy you are and I hate to add one more thing to your to-do list! However, the health and safety of our debaters are top-priorities for us. We trust you understand.
