We have developed a high-performance next-generation lithium-ion battery cathode that eliminates the need for costly nickel and cobalt. This cathode(DRX) is based on manganese materials and incorporates multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) to improve electronic conductivity and volume stability during battery operation. With an energy density of approximately 1050 Wh/kg, this new cathode design provides a 40% increase in energy density compared to traditional cathodes.

(New Paper) Ukseon's recent work on the new liquid electrolyte for safer Li-ion batteries with Dr. Minah Lee and Dr. Jayeon Baek has been published in Energy Environ. Sci.! This is featured on the front cover.

We propose molecular engineering of linear carbonates as a method for creating thermally stable, high-performance batteries. We use a tailored molecule, bis(2-methoxyethyl) carbonate (BMEC), which possesses a flash point 90°C higher than that of conventional electrolytes, yet still maintains the necessary quality for battery performance. The study shows that the new BMEC electrolyte enables long-lasting cycling of graphite and Ni-rich layered oxide electrodes for over 500 cycles in practical pouch cells. Additionally, the BMEC electrolyte effectively reduces heat and reactive-gas release under various abuse conditions, successfully preventing a thermal explosion in a 4 Ah pouch cell upon nail penetration.

(New Paper) Jae-Seung's recent work on electrostatic covalent organic frameworks (COFs) for improved Li metal batteries (LMBs) with Prof. Sang-Young Lee has been published in ACS Energy Letter!

We've developed molecular traps that help regulate electrostatic interactions between charged molecules, leading to enhanced battery performance. By incorporating bipyridine-based COFs into NCM811 cathodes and Li metal protective layers, our approach improves Li+ desolvation, reduces solvent decomposition, and stabilizes electrolyte anions. The outcome is an LMB that effectively utilizes the theoretical specific capacity of NCM811 while maintaining stable Li plating/stripping. Our pouch-type LMB full cell offers competitive gravimetric and volumetric energy densities (466.7 Wh/kgcell/1370.1 Wh/Lcell) under constrained cell configurations. Explore the potential of our COF molecular traps for the next generation of batteries!

(New Paper) Jae-Seung's recent work on the new concept of solid electrolytes for all-solid-state batteries with Prof. Kyung-Wan Nam & Prof. Yoon Seok Jung has been published in Nature Communications!

We have successfully developed halide nanocomposite solid electrolytes (HNSEs) ZrO2(-ACl)-A2ZrCl6 (A = Li or Na) using cost-effective materials. These innovative HNSEs showcase significantly enhanced ionic conductivities at 30°C, reaching up to 1.3 mS/cm for Li+ and 0.11 mS/cm for Na+, while offering improved compatibility with sulfide solid electrolytes. Our advanced mechanochemical synthesis method forms nanostructured networks that boost interfacial superionic conduction. Our fluorinated ZrO2−2Li2ZrCl5F HNSE outperforms current alternatives, maintaining Li+ conductivity while improving high-voltage stability and interfacial compatibility. Moreover, we've successfully tested a Li-In||LiNi0.88Co0.11Mn0.01O2 lab-scale cell (115 mAh/g after ~2000 cycles), demonstrating impressive performance and setting the stage for efficient, sustainable all-solid-state battery development.

(New Paper) Eunryeol and Dong-Hwa's recent work with Prof. Jinhyuk Lee at McGill University and Prof. Hyun-Wook Lee at UNIST has been published in Advanced Materials! It has been featured on the front cover.

We reveal the multiphase heterogeneous nature of ultrahigh-energy Mn-based partially disordered Li-ion cathodes through combined experimental and computational studies. This fundamental understanding enables novel nanocomposite design, wherein a phase fraction of the nanocomposites is manipulated. Consequently, cathodes engineered via nanocomposite engineering exhibit superior reversible redox properties and improved cycle retention.

(New Paper) Our recent work with prof. Jinhyuk Lee at McGill University and prof. Ju Li at MIT has been published in Advanced Energy Materials!

Development of disordered‐rocksalt (DRX) Li‐ion cathodes based on the percolation theory of Li diffusion has steered researchers to consider “Li‐excess” (x > 1.1 in LixTM2−xO2; TM = transition metal) as being critical for high performance. It is demonstrated that Li‐excess benefits are chemistry specific at the nanoparticle scale and that DRXs made with low‐voltage TMs do not require Li‐excess for high capacity.

We develop a new class of mixed ionic–electronic conductors (MIECs) for a carbon‐free cathode (no liquid electrolyte) of a Li-air cell by combining first-principles calculations and experiments. The synthesized perovskite MIECs have both high electronic and lithium-ionic conductivities. The Li-air cell with an MIEC cathode delivers superior reversibility while avoiding the degradation associated with carbonaceous materials.
