My friend and I grew up together. So her grandparents were mine. Lola Edna lives in Texas but would come over every Easter and every Christmas. It was such an ordeal. I would go to my friend’s house more to see her grandma than to see her.
Whenever I would come over, she would know. So she would have this big bibingka tray for me. Oh, you're here now, she would say in the thickest Filipino accent. Oh, come eat now, come eat now. You've lost so much weight. Eat more, eat more.
Every 5 minutes she would pop her head in and ask: Do you need some more bibingka? with a little glass of water and a plate. When she would pop in her head, at least when I was there, she would say: Oh you're so pretty, where's your boyfriend now. This would start when I was 10. You need to get your friend a boyfriend. She's just a funny old woman.

She makes bibingka like no one else can. She gave me her recipe, but always like grandparents, they never actually have a recipe they just do it till you tell them it's enough. She would have it in this white ceramic square 9” pan that she would fill to the top with bibingka. It was my favorite food growing up. I would always look forward to going over to visit her and have some.

I associate her with my friend's house. There's a particular Lola Edna smell. It's one of those smells when you smell it it's like oh my gosh it's my childhood. The house would smell something similar year round. But when Lola Edna would show up, it would dramatically change.
It's a clean smell. It's kind of earthy. It's earthy but smells like detergent. It's like fresh laundry, but not the light smell. It's like laundry right after you take it out of the washer and are putting it into the dryer. It smells kind of wet. It's such a strong smell, with a hint of old asian lady perfume. Undertones of earth. If you could imagine what a lilac-bluish smells like? That's the color I associate the smell with. Irises have a sweeter smell. This has a more girthy smell
