Grandma (Bertha)
Grandma (Bertha)
Nathan
We always just called her Grandma. Even in winter, her home was never cold or felt thin. The air was warm and slightly humid because she would be cooking or baking. There is a lot of associations with food. I can always knew if she was baking a tray of cornbread or chocolate cake or brownies or cookies because you would enter the house, and the first thing would be that your glasses would fog up, but then the smell would hit you.
Every day she would pick us up from school, there would be snacks in the pockets of her Ford Crown Victoria car for us. She always knew which snacks should go to myself or my twin brother. I just remember she always took notes of what we liked in terms of snacks so it was always there.
She is the person I learned my attention to detail from because she always had she could pick out and knew which things my brother and I liked and she got those small details precise.
During the holidays, people would order trays and trays of cookies from her for their parties. She was never one to shy away from flavor. So this recipe starts with 12 c of flour. 3 c sugar 3c dark molasses.
She is always inclusive with her baking; very much that perspective of if you are going to do something, make sure you can include as many people as you can.
She never ever left the house and picked you up in sweatpants or a hoodie. At minimum it would be well-tailored jeans and a sweater.
She was so specific about how her clothing had to look and whatever jewelry she had matched. At minimum she would have blush and lipstick on.
Her signature perfume, always, Acqua Di Gio by Giorgio Armani.
