CASEL (Collaborative for Academic and Social Emotional Learning) is a foundational model/theory for SEL and the goal is for students to acquire the competencies to recognize and manage emotions, develop caring and concern for others, establish positive relationships, make responsible decisions and handle challenging situations effectively.
CASEL has been developed for schools to use to develop school wide SEL. The premise is that school wide SEL will engage the entire school community in creating caring, motivating and equitable learning environments that promote social, emotional and academic growth.
The model focuses on 5 competencies.
Self-awareness: culture, thoughts, feelings and potential. Understanding how the above influence behaviour and beliefs.
Self-management: manage emotions, thoughts, actions and achieve individual and collective goals. Coping with stress and anxiety and creating positive change.
Social Awareness: understand others, different perspectives and empathize with others.
Relationship Skills: connect and engage with others, form lasting friendships, communicating, solving problems, managing conflict and stand up for individual rights.
Responsible Decision Making: Put it all together to make caring choices. Think critically, analyze impact and support collective well-being.
