Monthly Update:
May 19, 2021
Our OCEAN Webinar Series wrapped up this semester, and we were extremely fortunate to host our esteemed speakers and welcome them to UMass Boston. If you were not able to join us for these discussions be sure to check out each of the speaker bios to learn more about their amazing backgrounds and to listen to their recorded talks. Also, a big shoutout to our podcast team who has been working hard over the past few months, leading some thoughtful conversations with our speakers and fellow undergraduate students.
This month's continuation of our Anti-Racism Media Monday history series focuses on the Civil Rights Movement. We will be looking specifically at the Brown v. Board of Education decision of 1954, the Equal Pay Act of 1963, Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. We will discuss the intersectionality of their influence on one another and their impacts at the time they were established, as well as how they have influenced change up to present day. Find information on the media content and how to join in the discussion here.
The SEGART team remains committed to fostering honest conversations and actions to reduce racial prejudice and harm incurred by students. We continue to work towards determining how the department can carry over important principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all aspects of our work and to creating a culture and climate that helps students to achieve their research and personal goals.
We welcome graduate students and collaborators as we strive to make UMB a more diverse and equitable place. Please contact us at the email below if you are interested in joining our efforts!
