Field Trips
Linda Vista Community Garden
During the Spring 2025 semester, we enjoyed a visit to the Linda Vista Community Garden, a half-acre, first-of-its-kind community garden built within a City of San Diego park. A project led and operated by the local 90-year-old non-profit Bayside Community Center, this garden host an assortment of amenities including: community rental plots, an outdoor classroom space, greenhouse, 22 raised garden beds, picnic areas, shade structures, and gardens of fruit trees and native pollinator plants.
We enjoyed learning about its history, harvesting some produce, and learning from the dedicated community workers that keep this garden thriving!
North County Fishermans Market
Supported in part by the California Sea Grant, the North County Fishermans Market was another great site to visit to learn about how this open-air market keep fresh, local access to sea fare accessible and affordable. Run through the operation of a small community of local fishermen, this fleet brings in hundreds of thousands of pounds of fish a year. For a small fee, the fisherman will process and package your fish for you.
We enjoyed a tour or the docks, met local fishermen selling the day's catch, a tour of several commercial vessels and learning about how this market turns a sea-to-table operation into lasting community connection.
