In this project I explored the effect of social media on society, while learning more about my social media use.
My results on the Am I addicted quiz were "You’re FAIRLY RELIANT on social media." I agree with my results as in the recent 1-2 years my screen time on average was about 5-6 hours daily with tiktok and instagram being on the top of the list but over the last 1-2 months I have been spending less time on social media which is a result of me wanting to be more productive and aware of the time I spend scrolling.
I choose this statistic because it contained apps that I am familiar with and still use. It stood out to me because of its use of numbers to present the data making it easy to analyze.
I found out that Youtube is still persistent among many, I knew it would be at least in the top 5 or top 3 most used but not first. I also did not believe facebook was so high but after looking at the age group the most it made a little more sense.
In short social media has a complicated impact on society. On the plus side, social media is connecting people better than ever better before. Allowing us to call, text, livestream almost everything better and faster than ever. accessing the web has also been made easier facilitating new jobs and benefiting schools. On the contrary, social media has paved way for cyberbullying, plagiarism and misinformation. With the accessibity of social media it has made it drastically easier to post misinformation and/or bully someone on a platform where one's identity is hidden. That being said the social media's impact is a bit more complex than a simple yes or no with strong points on both sides.
My main takeaways from this project is that many social media apps are still largely being used if not being used by more people today. Social media is going to include more features and facilitate many interactions which will continue to grow and be more accessible to society.
