Clubs that Create & Events

Moth Slam Club

(Podcasting too!)

We have a Moth Slam Club (Moth-Style Storytelling & Slam Poetry) that performs two Fridays a month at our "Library Fridays" events, and we also host at least half open mic and half club members for Moth-Style Storytelling or Poetry Slam on those days.

We are recording these performances for CLHS Library Podcasts to be posted in our district intranet.

All the work for these podcasts is being done by students, so imagine all the learning that goes into deciding which equipment to purchase, placing those orders, learning to use the recording equipment well and properly, editing the recordings into podcast material and posting the podcasts. And that is just the tech team! Our storytellers and slam performers are researching poetry, writing poetry and Moth-style stories, editing them, practicing in front of their peers, receiving feedback in a safe environment, and performing!

Maker Club

These students meet weekly and mostly love to spend time in the deconstruct space. They also try out new maker items for me and help develop directions etc for new stuff.

Library Advisory Board

These students help me make library programming and makerspace decisions. We meet monthly.

MAKER DAYS in early December! 45 students in need, 2 library days, 7 maker projects they could keep or use as gifts! This project was a roaring success and we are already planning next year's event!

Maker Days Project #2: Washcloth Animals

Maker Days Project #3: Sparkling Wall Letters

Maker Days Project #4: T-Shirt Pillows

Maker Days Project #5: Memory Photo Boards

Maker Days Project #6: Making Jewelry

Maker Days Project #7: Knotted Blankets

Wrapped and ready!

COLLABORATIVE PROJECTS

Each student paints a feather, and they can be assembled into an amazing set of wings! One of our intermediates has this up in the library--it's a great photo-op.

Have students collect plastic bottle caps and create art. We have an incredible example at our Learner Support Center (below) that inspired me to want to try. We are collecting bottle caps now!

Have students work to fold paper cranes and make a mobile for the library. This is one I'm wanting to try!

Another project on my bucket list (and a way to use up stacks of cd's!). Have students do some cd weaving to create miniature works of art that can then be joined. I need to have my KnitWitts Club try this!

KNITWITTS CLUB

I have open times in the morning where students can bring any kind of fiber projects they want to work on, and we just sit and knit (or crochet, cross-stitch, needlepoint, etc.) I'll have some relaxing music on, and it's a great opportunity to build relationships with students (and get some of my own projects done!).
