Join in on the Science by Diverse Scientists: A Cal-Bridge Physics and Astronomy Seminar Series. This new series will take place every other Tuesday at 4 pm. The talks are aimed primarily at undergraduate Physics and Astronomy students, though all are welcome. This is part of the Cal-Bridge program which connects CSU students to UC graduate programs.

The first talk will feature Prof. Gibor Basri of UC Berkeley and will be held Tuesday, August 25th at 4pm Pacific.

The second talk will be one of our very own Cal-Bridge Alums, Katy Rodriguez Wimberly, and future speakers include: Arturo Omar Martinez, Franklin Dollar, Shankari Rajagopal, Cora Fujiwara, Jarita Holbrook, Charles Brown II, Danny Caballero, Rocío Ng, Ronnie Shepherd, Brad Lyke, and Becky Flores.

The school is designed to offer a comprehensive training to graduate and advanced undergraduate students in observational techniques and tools for follow up of transient events at X-ray, UV, optical, infrared and radio wavelengths. The school sessions are organized by wavelength range and the format includes a short lecture that introduces the topic followed by an interactive workshop where students will be engaged in data analysis using real data from the LIGO, Keck Observatory in Hawaii, Palomar Observatory in California, the VLA in New Mexico and telescopes in the GROWTH global network of observatories.

We are in the era of multi-messenger astronomy, where we have seen a neutron star merger emit gravitational waves and then light up the entire electromagnetic spectrum on timescales of seconds to years. Having a broad training in observational techniques and data analysis across multiple wavelengths and gravitational waves will equip the next generation of astronomers with the skills to maximize time-domain science.

The astronomy school is part of the education and training program of GROWTH. The lectures and materials from each school are posted online on our website for students and educators.

Application Deadline is July 1st, 2020

Trainee Series Presented by ABRCMS Online. Funded by National Institute of General Medical Sciences. Managed by American Society for Microbiology. Registration is free. This series covers a range of topics on professional skill set and scientific development, writing abstracts, and preparing for graduate school.

June Events Include:

2020 Webinars and Presentations

Putting Your Science to WORK

Physics degree holders are among the most employable in the world. Science and technology employers know that potential hires with physics training offer a broad, problem-solving skill set that translates to almost any environment. Surprisingly, many scientists still find today’s job market to be a confusing and frustrating place.

From Academia to Entrepreneurship

In this webinar, APS Distinguished Lectureship recipient Thirumalai Venkatesan discusses many aspects of pursuing an entrepreneurial career while in an academic setting. The presentation includes several examples of student and faculty startups as well as Venkatesan's own experience in running a company for over three decades amidst an academic career.

There are also archived webinars from the past few years.
