Open Day for Dingwall Academy pupils
Saturday - 13/06/2026 - 9.00 am (weather dependent)
We would like to invite pupils from Dingwall Academy to an open day/come and try session of Scottish Coastal Rowing at The Storehouse.
Our youth activities are free of charge and the club will provide all the necessary equipment.
To sign up your child for the open day, please complete our Youth Membership Form:
On the day they will need:
• An adult to drop them off and afterwards collect them from The Storehouse
• Spare shoes that can get wet, crocks or old trainers work great (no wellies!)
• Shorts, leggings, or trousers that can be easily rolled up
• Sunglasses, sun cream, hat (if it’s nice and sunny)
• Warm tops, gloves, hat (if it’s colder)
• Water

Blue Space
“Blue space” in sport and recreation refers to natural or artificial water environments used for physical activity and wellbeing. Think liquid landscapes: coastlines, rivers, lakes, canals, even swimming pools.
If green space is the meadow, blue space is the horizon.
In practice, blue space includes activities like:
Open water swimming in a lake
Surfing along a coastline
Kayaking down a river
Sailing, rowing, paddleboarding
Even mindful walks along a waterfront
Researchers in sport science and public health use the term to describe how being active in or near water can enhance physical health, mental wellbeing, and recovery from stress. Water tends to amplify the experience. The soundscape shifts. Light dances differently. The body cools, floats, resists. Many people report reduced anxiety and improved mood compared to similar activity inland.
So blue space is not just “sport near water.” It is the idea that water itself becomes part of the training partner.

Our goal is to bring together members of our community via building and rowing our own St Ayles Skiff. Coastal rowing is a fun group activity that can be tailored to all abilities. We were the first public inshore club to build and row their own St. Ayles skiff. Our first boat 'Grebe' is named after the rare Slavonian Grebe that can be seen on inland lochs around Strathpeffer, our second boat 'Tern' joined her in 2022, we launched our 3rd boat- a Ness Yoal 'Sula' in March 2024, and just recently on 09/05/2026 we launched our 4th boat, a Wemyss Skiff 'Selkie'.
We have four categories of membership: YOUNG PERSON (Free), ADULT (£55), FAMILY (£80) and ASSOCIATE (Free). The membership year runs from 1st April to 31st March. However, if you join after 31st October, the fee is reduced to £25. More details and membership form.
Our club name features the village of Strathpeffer, where the majority of our founders live, but our rowers and builders come from as far afield as Golspie, Inverness, Strathconon and Moniack. We have no fixed limit to the area covered by 'District'. If you live close enough to take part in our events, then you are in our district and you are welcome!
