Oil:
o Cutting oil for tools is available in the club room for occasional use.
Tiles:
o Tiles are available in the club room.
o There are 2 sizes of tiles: 5” x 5” and 8” x 8”
o Use firing paper on tiles. Cut the firing paper to the exact size as the tile so the glass will not go over the edge of the tile.
o Tiles are used for pendants and small items. Several items can be placed on one tile but leave enough space between the items so that they do not fuse together. (Otherwise, two pieces will become one!)
Molds :
o Ceramic and metal models used to shape glass
o Many molds are available in the club room
Firing Paper:
o Available through the club monitor for $13.00/roll, cash or check.
o Used under glass for firing flat, solid pieces. There is no need for a tile.
Cut the paper ½ inch around the glass and use a small amount of glue to adhere the glass to the paper.
o Used on tiles. Used on most metal draping molds.
o Always put printed side down, clean side toward glass.
Glues/Adhesives:
o Use only a small amount of glue to keep pieces in place while moving the piece from the table to the firing shelf to the kiln.
o Use only liquid glue, not gel types. Liquid types fire off clean in the kiln. Gel types may leave a mark. NEVER USE ELMER’S OR OTHER BRANDS OF WOOD GLUE.
o Most commonly used glues are: GlassTac Gel (Blue; made specifically for use on glass) and GlassTac Liquid (Pink; good for frit.) And, Aleene’s Original Tacky Glue is also used. These glues are best as they dry slowly. While your design is progress, you can move pieces around.
o Super glue/Loctite type glues adhere immediately. They are best used to keep pieces in place when you are sure your design is complete. Or, these glues can be used mid-project to hold delicate pieces in place.
o Hairspray is useful for keeping frit in place.
o Aloe Vera gel can be used for quickly adhering pieces to firing paper.
