About Us
The Wildlife Rangers Division of the Richland County Sheriff’s Department (RCSD) is dedicated to preserving and protecting the natural resources, wildlife, and outdoor recreational areas within Richland County. This specialized unit plays a crucial role in enforcing conservation laws, preventing environmental crimes, and ensuring the safety of both residents and visitors in rural and wilderness areas.
Mission & Responsibilities
The Wildlife Rangers Division is tasked with safeguarding Richland County’s diverse ecosystems while balancing public access and enjoyment of natural spaces. Their primary responsibilities include:
Wildlife and Environmental Law Enforcement – Enforcing state and local regulations related to hunting, fishing, poaching, and land conservation to protect native species and habitats.
Park and Waterway Patrols – Conducting routine patrols in forests, parks, lakes, rivers, and nature reserves to deter illegal activity and assist visitors.
Search and Rescue Operations – Responding to emergencies involving lost hikers, stranded boaters, and missing persons in remote areas.
Human-Wildlife Conflict Mitigation – Managing interactions between people and wildlife to prevent harm to both, including responding to reports of dangerous animal encounters.
Illegal Dumping and Pollution Investigations – Identifying and prosecuting those responsible for environmental crimes such as illegal dumping, hazardous waste disposal, and water contamination.
Outdoor Recreation Safety – Educating the public on responsible hunting, fishing, and camping practices while ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
Collaboration & Community Engagement
The Wildlife Rangers Division works closely with local, state, and federal agencies, including the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, to enforce conservation laws and protect the county’s natural heritage. They also engage with the community through educational programs, wildlife safety seminars, and environmental awareness initiatives.
