The Richland County Sheriff's Department's Special Response Team (SRT) is a specialized unit within the Operations Division, dedicated to addressing high-risk situations that require advanced tactical response. Commanded by Deputy Chief Harry Polis Jr., the Operations Division encompasses various units, including the SRT, K9 Unit, Fugitive Task Force, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (Bomb Team), Snipers, Crisis Management Team, Homeland Security, Marine Patrol, Dive Team, Fleet Operations, Information Technology, and Records Division. These units collectively strive to maintain the highest level of readiness to combat any threats to the community.

The SRT is composed of highly skilled and specially trained deputies who are prepared to handle diverse challenges. Team members often serve in full-time positions within other divisions of the Sheriff's Department, such as the Uniform Division, Community Action Team (CAT), Drug Suppression Team (DST), Traffic Division, K-9, Narcotics, Internal Affairs, Reserve Program, Training Division, and Crime Analysis. This integration ensures that SRT operators bring a wealth of experience and expertise from various facets of law enforcement to their specialized roles.

Training is a cornerstone of the SRT's operational philosophy. Deputies undergo rigorous scenario-based training to prepare for a wide range of situations, emphasizing both tactical proficiency and de-escalation techniques. This dual focus ensures that the team is equipped to resolve incidents effectively while prioritizing the safety and well-being of all individuals involved.

The SRT has been instrumental in responding to critical incidents within Richland County. For instance, during the May 2020 protests, the team played a pivotal role in maintaining order and preventing the escalation of violence. Their efforts, under the leadership of Sheriff Buster Cherry, were crucial in safeguarding the community and upholding public safety.

In essence, the Special Response Team exemplifies the Richland County Sheriff's Department's commitment to excellence, readiness, and community trust. Through continuous training, diverse expertise, and a steadfast dedication to service, the SRT stands as a vital component in ensuring the safety and security of Richland County's residents.
