St. Thomas Aquinas was born in 1225, which is approximately 120 years before St. Catherine. He is known as the smartest man who ever lived. He memorized the whole Bible!
Because he was very smart, we can see a dove, the Holy Spirit, the source of his amazing gifts. The Holy Spirit is whispering in his ear and telling him what to write. Like St. Catherine, St. Thomas is a doctor of the church. He is called the Angelic Doctor of the Church because his science and theological writings are more divine than human.
The book that St. Thomas is writing is his most famous work. It is the Summa Theologica, the fullest body of theology ever written.
St. Thomas can be seen with a sun on his chest. This represents his great devotion to the Eucharist and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
He wrote many songs that we sing today, such as the Tantum Ergo seen on the open book. We sing this song every Lent during Benediction: “Down in Adoration falling, this great sacrament we hail…”
St. Thomas is gazing at the crucifix. He often said, “I learned more at the foot of the cross than from books.”
St. Thomas Aquinas is the patron saint of schools, universities, and students.
Dear Lord, grant us the virtue of prudence that we may make sound judgements as St. Thomas Aquinas did.
St. Thomas, pray for us! Amen
