In 1375, St. Catherine travelled to Pisa, Italy to convince the faithful there to follow the true pope. While she was in St. Christina’s Church in Pisa (notice the leaning tower through the window), she had a third encounter with our Lord.
After receiving communion on the fourth Sunday of Lent, St. Catherine prayed for a long time. Suddenly, she was lifted up as five jets of red shot through the air, transformed into streams of light, and pierced her hands, feet, and side.
This is an image of the actual crucifix which hangs in Siena, Italy. We can gaze upon and pray in front of the same crucifix that is in St. Catherine’s hometown.
St. Catherine asked our Lord to keep her gift of the stigmata a secret from her fellow sisters. However, another witness was sure to know of it. Mary, as seen in the painting of the Annunciation, witnessed another miracle of St. Catherine’s devotion to Jesus.
Some elements of this church in Pisa can be found in our own St. Catherine church. The candlesticks and the quatrefoil are common themes.
