St. Dominic is the founder of the Dominican Order, also called the Order of Preachers.
St. Catherine belonged to this same order. He was born in 1170, which is approximately 170 years before St. Catherine.
During his time, the Catholic Church was attacked by many heresies.
St. Dominic is shown holding a rosary. The Virgin Mary gave him the rosary as an effective prayer to stop the heresies, or wrong teachings. Many Dominicans wear the rosary on their belts as they would wear a sword. They are prepared to use this “sword of the spirit” as a weapon of prayer.
The two men at St. Dominic’s feet are examples of the French to whom he preached the truth. Can you see how their facial expressions and hand gestures depict their questioning of St. Dominic?
St. Dominic’s preaching was effective as the heresies were defeated.
A dog holding a burning torch is at St. Dominic’s feet, too. Before he was born, his mother had a dream of a dog running around the world with a torch, setting the world on fire.
St. Dominic would grow up to set the world on fire with his preaching. And, as St. Catherine’s famous quote states, “Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire.”
St. Dominic can be seen with a star over his head. On the day he was baptized, his godmother saw a star floating above his head.
St. Dominic is holding a book of the Gospel of Matthew. Wherever he went, he carried the Gospel with him, and through his preaching, he points us toward heaven.
Behind St. Dominic is a lady who is part of a miracle attributed to him. One day while St. Dominic was preaching, the woman left her sick son at home to listen to him. When she returned home, her son had passed away. She carried her son back to St. Dominic who prayed to God for the boy’s life. Miraculously, the boy returned to life!
There are many miracles attributed to St. Dominic. Hopefully, this one will encourage you to learn more about the others.
Dear Lord, grant us the virtue of fortitude that we may be as strong in our faith as St. Dominic.
St. Dominic, pray for us! Amen
