Genre Overview: Proposal
The “Proposal” genre is a persuasive form of writing, where the writer presents a plan or suggestion and seeks to convince the reader of its merit. Unlike the Profile genre, which focuses on providing insight into a subject, Proposal writing aims to persuade the reader to agree with a specific course of action. The writer must present a clear, concise, and compelling argument that demonstrates the benefits and feasibility of the proposed plan.
Genre in Action:
Proposals are easily identifiable. For instance, Presidents often propose new policies or initiatives in their State of the Union addresses, aiming to persuade the public and lawmakers of their merit. Senators and Representatives propose bills, advocating for specific changes or solutions. These proposals undergo rigorous debate and scrutiny before becoming law. Similarly, entrepreneurs on the show “Shark Tank” propose business ideas to potential investors, using persuasive tactics to secure funding. Think about writers, producers, and directors, they all have to propose their story ideas to executives and audiences. For instance, every TedTalk is based on an issue and a subsequent solution. Take the TedTalk given by journalist Sebastian Junger entitled "Why do Soldiers miss the War?" Junger first presents his topic, provides insight into the issue, diagnoses the cause (which is the loss of brotherhood), and finally proposes a solution (returning America to a tribal culture of inclusion). Even in our personal lives, we often use the Proposal genre. When deciding where to eat, what to wear, or what to watch, we make proposals and provide reasons to support our suggestions. Wedding proposals, too, fall under this genre, where one person proposes marriage to another, often going to great lengths to persuade their partner to say “yes.” Ultimately, proposals are persuasive acts—whether on a global stage or within our hearts—where we present ideas, solutions, and choices, backed by compelling reasons. They shape our world, one proposal at a time!
Remember - The goal of a proposal is to persuade the reader to agree with your plan or suggestion. It should be well-reasoned, clear, and compelling, demonstrating both the need for action and the benefits of your proposed solution.
