The Scripps Ranch Powder Puff Derby is a car building and racing event modeled after the Cub Scout Pinewood Derby. This event gives our Girl Scouts the same exposure to designing and constructing these wonderful cars as their male peers. With the help of an adult, the girls build their own cars from a car kit containing a block of pine, plastic wheels and metal axles. To make the races (which can get pretty competitive) fair, the Powder Puff Derby follows a defined set of size and weight rules which can be accessed by clicking on the "Rules" tab to the left. This is a great way to expose girls to the process of working with tools as well as various engineering concepts.
The car kit is included with the entry fee. Each girl earns a patch and there are many awards for speed and car design.
