The Shelby Rhodes Memorial Scholarship was established in 2017 by Bro. Jon Cox, members of her church home at Bethany First Missionary Baptist Church, family and friends to honor the memory of Shelby Carol Rhodes who died tragically in an automobile accident August 10, 2017. Shelby’s passing came just two days before beginning her senior year in college.
In her 21 years Shelby lived a truly remarkable life. Spirited, humble, kind, sweet, graceful, forthright and caring she had a deep and lasting impact on all who knew her. She continually sought educational opportunities and courageously maximized all afforded to her. She was a founding member of the Vanderbilt University Aspirnaut Program, the following was written by the founder of the program in honor of her.
“We remember Shelby with great fondness and admiration. We met when she was a sixth grade student at Sheridan Middle School. Shelby would become a founding member of Aspirnaut, our educational program from Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The experimental program engaged rural students in coursework while traveling on long bus rides to and from school. She and her classmates were among the first students in the whole world to complete coursework while riding on a school bus using laptop computers connected to the internet. Shelby was featured on NBC Nightly News, New York City, in March 2008. Shelby was bright and motivated. We were deeply saddened to hear the news and are very sorry for your incredible loss.”

“She is an extremely focused and dedicated student who believes in personal accountability, and that attitude shines through in everything she does.”
“She came prepared every day to learn so that she could maximize the benefit of our time together.”
”Possessing the ability to consider ideas contrary to one’s own is the hallmark of a mature thinker, and Shelby is able to consider any issue or problem from a wide variety of angles.”
“The other side of Shelby is the student who will also take the time to help another student who might be struggling so that they can find success alongside her. Life, like learning, is a team sport to Shelby.”
