End of Fall Updates!
Hello Scott Green team!
As the seasons shift and we are winding down from school activities for the rest of the year, we wanted to take a moment to share some gratitude and updates from the Green Team!
Can you believe we are already at the close of Fall and start of Winter!!? These months really fly by, especially since we were separated from school for most of November. It was so awesome to see many of you on the picket line supporting our amazing teachers! The strength of the Scott community was seen and felt in a major way, and I’m so grateful to be a part of this community with you all!
We were so sad that the planned Fall garden work party had to be cancelled due to school closures. It’s always so helpful to have many hands to complete garden tasks. Plus, it’s so special to gather as a community to build relationships and work together to improve our school's landscape! Despite the cancellation, we have been chipping away in small groups to prune and protect plants, plant winter seeds, and put things to bed for the winter. There is still a little more to do, so look out for spontaneous garden work gatherings on dry days after school next week!
Did you know that our school takes part in the Youth Grow program from Growing Gardens? Growing Gardens is an amazing local organization with a mission to get children into the garden to learn about nature, nutrition, and food system sustainability. This programming is offered to students through cafeteria tastings, take-home recipe kits, in-class gardening and food preparation lessons, and the SUN garden club. Ms. Carla (English classes) and Ms. Angeles (Spanish classes) are the Scott in-school educators, and Ms. Amber is the garden coordinator and SUN Garden Club educator. This summer, Growing Gardens and the Scott Green Team are planning to organize a weekly summer garden meet-up to maintain engagement with students and families, share the bounty of the summer produce, and water and care for the garden through the hot summer months. Reach out if you are interested in helping out or learning more!
The summer and fall garden at Scott was very productive this year! The students were excited to harvest several pounds of cherry tomatoes, a huge purple cabbage, lots of kale, broccoli and other leafy greens, berries and many more items! This produce was shared through Growing Gardens in classrooms, with SUN garden club students, and at the Free Food market after school. We are so grateful for Growing Gardens and the community of students, faculty, parents and others that helped support and maintain the garden in 2023! As we make plans for the 2024 spring garden, we invite you to share with us the vegetables, fruit and plants that are important to your family and culture so that we can incorporate more culturally relevant foods into the garden each season.
This summer students also helped to collect flower and tomato seeds from the school garden to share with the school community. We have packets of Showy Milkweed seeds available to share now! Showy milkweed is a PNW native plant and is also the primary food source for Monarch butterflies. It’s an easy-care plant that works in most sunny gardens. It spreads easily, so I recommend containing it to a pot, or planting it in a place where it can go wild. If you would like a packet or two, please get in touch! They make great gifts to share with fellow gardeners!
We are excited to share that we are in the final planning phase for planting trees on campus this winter! We will plant over 50 trees with Learning Landscapes on either Feb 5th or 9th, and 6 more trees and understory plants with Friends of Trees sometime in March! We will share exact dates and a volunteer sign up once dates and times are locked in! We are also working through the process to apply for a grant to revamp the small rain garden located near the main vegetable garden. If everything works out, we will be planting this area in early spring as well! Thank you to all the volunteers that have been supporting these efforts. It’s been a long journey and is so exciting to see the end in sight and dream about how much the landscape will be transformed by these efforts! It will be exciting to celebrate these accomplishments at our Earth Day celebration in April!
Scott PTA is part of the Bottle Drop Program, which enables the PTA to earn funds by collecting and recycling redeemable cans and bottles! Anyone can participate. It’s as easy as 1-2-3. Please pick up some blue bags before the holiday break at our new PTA mailbox- posted on NE 66th on the fence between the portable and school garden.
1. Pick up a Blue Bag or two from the blue PTA mailbox, or email Greenteam@somosscott.org to request bags.
2. Fill up your bag at home at your pace with redeemable cans and bottles. (Look for the $.10 icon on the side to see if it is redeemable.)
3. Turn in your full bag at any Bottle Drop redemption location. (The closest one to Scott is at Safeway! There is a QR code sticker on the side of the bag that you scan to gain access to the drop window. )

We wish you all a cozy and restful winter break! We hope that you have the opportunity to spend lots of quality time with friends and family, and that you take the time to relax and recoup energy as we prepare for warmer days ahead!

¡Hola equipo de Scott Green!
Al paso de los cambios de temporada, vamos terminando las actividades escolares durante el resto del año y quería tomar un momento para compartir gratitud y también compartir noticias del Equipo Verde.
¿¡Puedes creer que ya estamos al final del otoño y comenzando el invierno!? Estos meses pasan muy rápido, especialmente porque estuvimos separados de la escuela durante la mayor parte de noviembre. ¡Fue increíble ver a muchos de ustedes en el piquete apoyando a nuestros increíbles maestros! La fuerza de la comunidad de Scott se vio y se sintió de manera importante. ¡estoy muy agradecida de ser parte de esta comunidad con todos ustedes!
Estábamos muy tristes porque se tuvo que cancelar la fiesta de trabajo en el jardín debido al cierre de escuelas. Siempre se agradece tener tanta ayuda para trabajar y cuidar del jardín. ¡Además, reunirnos como comunidad para conocernos y trabajar juntos para mejorar la vista de nuestra escuela es algo muy especial! A pesar de la cancelación, hemos estado trabajando en pequeños grupos. Podamos las plantas, plantamos semillas, y preparamos las plantas y la tierra para recibir el frio del invierno. Welcome to a new year at Scott!
The Green Team leaders had a busy summer preparing for some fun projects and events for this school year, and we are so excited to share updates with you!
First of all, thank you to those who came to Community Care day back in August to help us prepare the gardens and landscape for the new year. It was wonderful to meet so many new students and families that are excited about working in the garden and beautifying our school campus!
If you don't know...
The Green Team is a wing of the Scott PTA that was founded in 2022 to provide leadership and harness volunteer and student energy around efforts to make our school more sustainable and climate friendly.
Our goals are to:
Create events, gatherings and programming that provide fun and exciting education and engagement related to gardening, recycling, sharing, fixing and other eco-friendly efforts
Identify opportunities to make greener choices in our school, homes and community
Support the care and health of the school gardens, and plants and trees in our landscape
Keep our school yard clean and free of litter
Spearhead recycling programs, like the Bottle Drop program
Build a community dedicated to supporting climate change resiliency now and into the future
Green Team projects for 2023-2024:
Tree Planting: Last year, we worked through all the steps to gain approval from PPS for planting trees on campus, including creating this Vision Plan for Greening Scott’s Campus and we are excited to report that we have received approval to work with Portland Parks + Recreation’s Learning Landscapes program beginning this fall.
We have identified locations to plant over 50 trees around the perimeter of the school yard. PP&R will manage the watering and establishment of these trees for the first 2 years. They will also provide tree learning opportunities to 1-2 classrooms. *Once we have a date set for planting, we will start recruiting volunteers to help us get all the trees into the ground!
*Stay tuned: We are currently working through the steps to gain approval for phases 2 and 3 of this plan. Phase 2 will be working with Friends of Trees to add understory plants and a few additional trees to beautify the landscaping at the front entrance of school. Phase 3 entails working with the Bureau of Environmental Services to remove targeted areas of blacktop from the back of school to create tree planting zones to shade the south-facing classroom. These trees will provide much needed shade to the classrooms in the back that are negatively affected by reflected heat from the blacktop in warm months.

Fall Clothing Swap: Start saving your kids hand-me-downs for our first school wide clothing swap. We will be setting up the swap in conjunction with the Pancake Breakfast on Nov 4th. We will be taking clean clothing, coats and shoes that are in good shape (no rips or stains). Come shop at the swap on Nov 4th and get some new fall items and pancakes too! Stay tuned for more info on where to bring items and how you can volunteer to help!
Garden Care Days: Join us in the school gardens for quarterly garden care days! We will gather seasonally to tackle maintenance, watering, planting and other tasks in the garden areas. We will have some extra volunteer days this fall to prepare for tree planting as well!

Los líderes del Equipo Verde tuvieron un verano ocupado preparándose para algunos proyectos y eventos divertidos para este año escolar, ¡y estamos muy emocionados de compartir actualizaciones con ustedes!

April 2023- Earth Month
Happy Earth Month Scotties!
Spring is in the air! You might have noticed the plants, birds and trees waking up and coming alive.
April 22nd is Earth Day, a day to come together to demonstrate a commitment to protecting the Earth and its resources. The Scott school Green team has been busy preparing activities for the month of April and beyond! We are excited to share them with you, and to see the school community come together in the garden as the weather continues to warm!

La primavera está en el aire! Es posible que haya notado que las plantas, los pájaros y los árboles se despiertan y cobran vida.
El 22 de abril es el Día de la Tierra, un día para unirse y demostrar el compromiso de proteger la Tierra y sus recursos. ¡El equipo verde de la escuela Scott ha estado ocupado preparando actividades para el mes de abril y más allá! ¡Estamos emocionados de compartirlos con usted y de ver a la comunidad escolar reunirse en el jardín mientras el clima continúa siendo cálido!
Earth Day Celebration- April 22nd
We hope you will join us Saturday April 22nd from 3-5pm for an Earth Day celebration in the Scott garden!
We will be celebrating the Earth with music, art making and by sharing lots of ways to make your home, school and community more green and efficient! Walk or ride your bike if you can!
Growing Gardens will be on hand to share info about raising chickens!
Scott Green team will be showing off the rain garden, pollinator garden and bug hotel, and a compost exploration station. We will also be making art to “re-envision our school landscape” with trees!
Making Earth Cool, a local environmental art collective, will be there to lead a recycled art making project.

Celebración del Día de la Tierra - 22 de abril

In preparation of the Earth Day event, we are planning a Garden Work Party on April 15th from 10-1pm. We will be spreading chips, doing some repairs, and cleaning up the garden and school yard. Swing by for as long as you can. Bring a friend, some water and snacks. If you have tools or special skills to contribute, please contact Amber to chat!

Bottle Drop Fundraiser
Have you heard about the blue Bottle Drop bags yet? Scott PTA participates in the Bottle Drop program to raise funds for our school and community projects. Collecting bottles and cans is an easy way to help fundraise and recycle! Just pick up a blue bag from the “Bottle Drop” container in the school garden. Bring it home and fill it with redeemable cans and bottles. When it’s full, just drop it off at a collection location. The closest one to Scott is at Safeway on NE Sandy! We receive about $10 per bag! You can participate in this fundraiser year round, but if you turn in your bags between April 10-22nd, we will receive an additional 20% match as part of their April Give campaign! If you have a full bag and need an assist with turning it in, reach out to the Green Team and we will pick it up for you.

Tree Planting Project
The Green team leaders have been busy working through the process to plant more trees on the Scott campus. Trees are not only beautiful to look at, but they also provide shade to cool our community and school, they attract birds and insects and support local ecology, they help clean the water and air, and they sequester carbon from the atmosphere! Our school has room for lots of trees, without sacrificing play space! We are working with the PPS sustainability office, PP&R’s Learning Landscapes program, and Friends of Trees to organize a 2 year tree planting and care plan. Proyecto de plantación de árboles
Los líderes del equipo verde han estado ocupados trabajando en el proceso para plantar más árboles en el campus de Scott. Los árboles no solo son hermosos a la vista, sino que también brindan sombra para refrescar nuestra comunidad y escuela, atraen pájaros e insectos y apoyan la ecología local, ayudan a limpiar el agua y el aire, ¡y secuestran carbono de la atmósfera! ¡Nuestra escuela tiene espacio para muchos árboles, sin sacrificar el espacio de juego! Estamos trabajando con la oficina de sostenibilidad de PPS, el programa Learning Landscapes de PP&R y Friends of Trees para organizar un plan de cuidado y plantación de árboles de 2 años. ¡Nos encantaría hablar contigo más sobre este proyecto y escuchar dónde crees que los árboles funcionarían mejor! ¡Ven a uno de nuestros eventos este mes o envíanos un correo electrónico para unirte a la conversación!
