Main Quest Quarter 2 (Graded) (Must-Do Activities to Progress)
Main Quest Quarter 2 (Graded) (Must-Do Activities to Progress)
Welcome to the Main Quest! These are the self-paced activities you'll be completing to progress at The Academy for the 2nd Quarter of the school year. This is not all you will be doing in day-to-day classes, but you'll have time specifically set-aside to work on these. Every "Quest," "Training Session," "Monster Hunt," and "Weekly Sparring Session," will earn you XP, or experience in your path of study.
These points are also an easy way to follow your grade in this part of the class. Anything over 140XP = 100% in this part of your grade. You can earn up to 150XP this quarter in the Main Quest, so you'll need to complete almost every activity. You can monitor your progress and grade by following your chart on Google Classroom!
Quest #1: Academy Inventions
Since you were transported to The Academy at the start of the school year, you've missed a few of the inventions and conveniences of home. This world has some things that are strangely modern, and others that are extremely outdated.
The Gnomes of the nearby Isle of Alev frequently trade with the people of The Academy. Their inventions are amazing, but their creativity is not. They mostly create clockwork beasts to protect their island, but you recently thought of the idea of seeing if you could convince them to build other more useful things.
For this project, think of an invention from your everyday life, something you use every day, and maybe take for granted. You will be designing a proposal to convince the tinkerers of Alev to try to build this device for The Academy.
Project: Create a presentation, detailing the following parts of a modern-day device, invention, etc. that may benefit The Academy if it was built. Make sure your presentation has the following parts.
1.) Detail what the device is, why it is important in our world. How popular it is, the history of it, who invented it, the ways it effects everyday life, etc.
2.) Detail how this device is built. Does it use simple/complex machines to make it function? What materials are needed? How is it manufactured? You'll probably need to do some research.
Hint: Think about this like you were transported back in time. It may be easier to describe how to build something like a refrigerator or an elevator compared to something like a cell phone. It's up to you though!
Show Mastery: Turn-in your presentation, make sure it is detailed, has illustrations, and covers all aspects of the project as described above.
What If I Don't Achieve Mastery?: If your project does not meet specifications you will be given back your product and asked to revise based on what is missing.
Quest #2: Mystery Quest - Student Reading
Amidst the rigorous training and studies, students of The Academy find solace and inspiration in the age-old tales of heroism and valor. Diverse in scope and transcending class boundaries, these stories serve as a beacon, illuminating the ideals that the Academy cherishes. From audacious Bards to tenacious Knights, each tale is a testament to the indomitable spirit, reminding scholars of the heights they too might reach in their own journeys.
Project: Students at The Academy will all be reading a book together as part of the One Book, One School project at SCMS. This will count as Quest #2 for all classes. It will also count for a separate (important) grade as part of school/class requirements.
Note: This Quest will be completed in-class over several weeks. You may have to read some for homework if you do not complete in class. NOTE: This quest begins at the same time the assignment starts for all other students in the school.
Show Mastery: Complete the reading entries as required in class.
What If I Don't Achieve Mastery?: You may be asked to go back and re-read/complete chapters.
Quest #3: Mystery Quest - Student Writing
At the midpoint of their Academy year, an enigmatic task awaits every student. More than a mere exam or written assignment, it's a rite of passage, veiled in mystery, beckoning students to plumb the depths of their understanding. The true nature of this challenge remains concealed, but one thing is certain: one's grasp of their class and knowledge acquired will be thoroughly tested. It's whispered that this test not only gauges academic prowess but something deeper within each scholar.
Project: Students at The Academy will be tasked with a final Quest near the very end of Quarter 3. This will involve the student writing about something they have learned as part of their class this quarter. More details will follow.
Note: This Quest will be completed in-class. You will not have to work on this for homework.
Show Mastery: Complete the quest assignment as directed in-class.
What If I Don't Achieve Mastery?: If your quest assignment does not meet guidelines set in-class, you will be asked to complete it and turn it in again.
Training Session #1 - SCI- 1.9 Humans and the Environment
You did it! You completed your first quarter of training at the Academy and leveled up your skills in a class. You decide to begin Quarter 2 training as a member of the Ranger class.
As you are no longer an initiate at The Academy and have become a full-fledged member, you join other students of your class to listen to the opening speech from the Ranger Grandmaster, the most powerful Ranger at The Academy, (and likely on the western continent as a whole.)
He notes that much of his attention, and the attention of the other highest trainers and masters of The Academy is focused on investigating a growing threat across the Eastern Ocean. Since the most powerful members of The Academy are investigating this mysterious threat, they task you and the other first-year students with investigating a threat closer to home.
A strange corruption has begun to take root in the forest surrounding The Academy. Each class will tackle a separate issue while simultaneously training to discover the reason the forest grows darker and more threatening.
All First-Year Students 🍄will battle the strange new corrupted monsters of the forest in order to keep the Academy and nearby lands safe.
Members of the Bard Class 🎵 will do what they can to protect the wildlife of the forest this quarter. While this may seem a task more suited for members of the Ranger Class, or Beastmasters, Bards will protect the wildlife as a whole.
Members of the Beastmaster Class 🐍 will try to use their bonds with creatures to try to learn what they can from the strange creatures and corrupted wildlife.
Members of the Knight Class ⚔️ will try to keep the peace within and outside the walls of The Academy. This strange new evil is unsettling the people, and it is up to them to make sure the peaceful lives of the citizens are not interrupted.
Members of the Ranger Class 🏹will be studying the strange chemical composition of the corruption threatening the forest in an attempt to discover a remedy for the parts already negatively impacted.
Members of the Magician Class 🧙will be attempting to unseal a strange door deep within one of the most dangerous parts of the corrupted forest, to hopefully uncover a hidden source of the problem.
Good Luck!

Training Session #2 - SCI 1.10 Human Body Systems
The first stop for Ranger students to investigate the corruption was the pumpkin field that lay just outside the border of the forest. In any other season, this patch would be filled with children, gleefully choosing pumpkins for the fall harvest festivals. But now, it stood eerily quiet, the festive orange hues overshadowed by the menacing darkness that crept from the forest's edge.
The trees marking the boundary had a charred appearance, not from fire, but from the strange black growths that covered their bark like a blight. The ground, too, was marred with patches of inky darkness, which seemed to be a solidified form of the corruption.
The Rangers began their meticulous work, taking samples from both affected and unaffected areas. Their goal was to isolate the substance, to understand its makeup, and hopefully, its origins. With each soil and bark sample collected, they hoped to piece together the puzzle of the forest's decay.

Training Session #3 - SCI 1.11 - DNA VS RNA
As the Rangers entered the labs underneath The Arbor, their samples in tow, the air was charged with a mix of anticipation and urgency. They had seen firsthand the speed at which the corruption was spreading. Time was of the essence.
In the central lab, various apparatus buzzed and hummed as they began the process of analyzing the samples. Pipettes, vials, and burners came alive under the skilled hands of the students. The peculiar black substance was isolated, subjected to a battery of tests to determine its elemental composition, its pH level, its radiative properties, and more.
Hours turned into days as the Rangers tirelessly worked, cross-referencing their findings with The Academy's extensive library of botanical anomalies and magical afflictions. But as more data poured in, it became clear that this blight was unlike anything they had encountered before. It was both organic and arcane, a twisted union of nature's aberration and a sinister magical intent.
And as the days turned to nights, the ambient glow from the experiments painted an ethereal light in the depths of the Arbor, symbolizing the unwavering determination of the Rangers to unearth the mysteries of the forest's corruption.

Training Session #4 - SCI 1.12 - DNA Structure & Replication
Guided by the initial findings from the Arbor labs, a group of Ranger students decided to venture further into the depths of the forest. The deeper layers had long been a sanctuary for the oldest trees, some predating even The Academy itself. But now, these ancient guardians of the forest stood grotesquely deformed by the insidious corruption.
Their gnarled trunks were more than just disfigured; they pulsed, as though an unnatural life force coursed through them. The Rangers could feel the very air grow denser and more oppressive as they delved deeper, the weight of centuries-old sorrow pressing down on them.
Using specially designed tools, they carefully took samples from these ancient beings. However, as they prepared to retreat back to the safety of the Arbor, something unsettling occurred. The samples, contained securely within glass vials, began to twitch and squirm as if alive.

Training Session #5 - SCI 1.13 Cell Organelles
In the heart of the Arbor's grandest chamber, the seasoned bark of the walls seemed to shimmer as the Rangers welcomed a guest from The Magician class. This wasn't any ordinary magician; he was the venerable Eldric, a living relic of The Academy, his age evident in the many wrinkles on his face and the long, silver beard.
As they shared their findings, Eldric listened intently, every so often his brow furrowing deeper with concern. When shown the animated samples, he inhaled sharply. "By the stars..." he whispered, a hint of fear evident in his usually confident voice.
"I've seen this before," Eldric began, his voice trembling with the weight of memories he'd rather forget. "But it was decades ago, during my early years at The Academy. I thought.....I thought it was sealed away."
He refuses to elaborate further, but tells the young Rangers to report to the captains. They need to send out more patrols now.

Training Session #6 - SCI 1.14 Energy Transfer & Circuits
The Ranger students relayed their findings and their conversation with Eldric to the Ranger Captain Alura. "Eldric is wise," she began, "and if he senses this magnitude of danger, we should heed his warnings."
"But," she continued, looking at each of the Ranger students, "the battlefield isn't just out here with blades and arrows. It's in the labs, in the research, in the quest for understanding. You've delved deeper into this corruption than anyone else. You've witnessed its horrors firsthand and have the unique skills to decipher its origins."
Drawing herself to her full height, Captain Alura decreed, "Go back to the lab. While we will dive deep into the woods and search out the source, you must unravel this mystery. Use your intellect, your intuition, and every resource available. The Academy's defense isn't just about force; it's about knowledge. We fight, and you think."
She gave them a reassuring nod, her determination clear. "Together, we'll drive this darkness away."

Training Session #7 - SCI 1.15 - Vascular Plants
The walls of the Arbor's labs were abuzz with whispers and hurried exchanges. Tales of Captain Alura's battle alongside the renowned Cat Knight, Sir Pounce, had spread like wildfire. Apparently they along with an entire squad of Knights and Rangers had to work together to defeat one otherworldly knight deep in the corrupted forest.
Amidst the atmosphere of awe and inspiration, you found yourself deep in research. The rhythmic dripping of distillation columns and the soft hum of arcane machinery surrounded you, yet your focus remained unyielded. Hours blurred as solutions were mixed, samples analyzed, and hypotheses tested.
Then, in a moment that felt as if time itself held its breath, it happened. With deft fingers, you held up a small glass vial, its contents shimmering with an otherworldly glow. The corruption, in its most base form, had been isolated. The liquid inside the vial seemed to pulse with a malevolent energy, yet it was contained, captured, and ready for further study.

Training Session #8 - SCI 1.16 - Speed VS Velocity
You had placed the vial containing the corruption's essence on a pedestal in the lab's center, ensuring that all safety precautions were observed. As the hours passed and the Academy slept under a blanket of stars, the liquid inside the vial began a transformation that none could have predicted.
Glowing softly at first, the liquid began to thrash and swirl, its movements growing increasingly violent. As you watched in a mix of fascination and trepidation, the dark, swirling mass began to coalesce, its color deepening to a rich violet hue.
Before your very eyes, the liquid solidified, taking the shape of a luminous jewel. The gem was unlike any you had seen before - its surface was etched with twisting lines of black corruption, moving and writhing like serpents beneath the crystal facade.
A sense of foreboding washed over you. The newly formed gem seemed to pulse with an energy, almost as if it were alive, its very presence dominating the room. Yet, amidst the unease, a thought sparked in your mind: Could this jewel be the key to the forest's salvation?

For this unique sparring session, students will swap swords for brushes and spells for palettes as they engage in a creative battle of colors and canvas. Set within a sunlit atrium adorned with hanging ivy and trickling fountains, the essence of artistry fills the air. Bards, with their inherent touch of creativity and expression, have a clear advantage in capturing the ambiance and intricacies of their subjects. Knights, clad in their weighty armor, may find the finesse required for painting a tad challenging, potentially producing abstract pieces unintentionally. Beastmaster students will have the additional challenge of ensuring their animated animal companions don't get too curious around the paint pots, resulting in accidental art splatters or spilled palettes. With every brushstroke, competitors will showcase a different side of their skills, revealing vulnerability, passion, and imagination in ways the Academy has never seen before. Who will craft the masterpiece that captures the heart of the Academy?

Weekly Sparring Session #7
In the heart of an autumn-hued field, an ensemble of geometrically-perfect geodesic domes stands tall, each crafted immaculately from a rare, uniform wood. As the next sparring session dawns, combatants are enclosed within these wooden structures. The only way out? Dismantle the dome from within. As participants work to break apart their confinements, the field soon reverberates with the echoing thuds of striking and splintering wood. While Knights might use sheer strength to rupture the dome's facets, Rangers could employ precision to target weak points. The unpredictable nature of this sparring session means that once the wooden shards settle, fighters could emerge anywhere and at any time, making for dynamic and unexpected bouts of skill and wit in the midst of the autumn splendor.

Weekly Sparring Session #8
Venturing far from the familiar, the final sparring session of the quarter is set amidst the very nexus of malevolence: the darkest, most corrupted part of the forest encircling The Academy. The atmosphere here is dense with a sinister energy, and the trees seem to whisper twisted secrets. But with risk comes potential reward. The Academy's higher-ups theorize that the sheer force of magical and physical combat might pierce through the darkness and unveil hidden truths about the forest's ailment. As students clash amidst the withered flora and tainted terrain, every spell cast, every blade swung, and every note sung is imbued with the dual purpose of triumph in combat and the desperate hope of restoring the woods. This session is not just about prowess but a fervent plea to the heart of the forest to reveal its mysteries.
