Main Quest Quarter 1 (Graded) (Must-Do Activities to Progress)
Main Quest Quarter 1 (Graded) (Must-Do Activities to Progress)
Welcome to the Main Quest! These are the self-paced activities you'll be completing to progress at The Academy for the 1st Quarter of the school year. This is not all you will be doing in day-to-day classes, but you'll have time specifically set-aside to work on these. Every "Quest," "Training Session," "Monster Hunt," and "Weekly Sparring Session," will earn you XP, or experience in your path of study.
These points are also an easy way to follow your grade in this part of the class. Anything over 140XP = 100% in this part of your grade. You can earn up to 150XP this quarter in the Main Quest, so you'll need to complete almost every activity. You can monitor your progress and grade by following your chart on Google Classroom!
Quest #1: Cards of the Elements
The inventive study methods of the Rangers at The Academy offer a unique insight. These nature-loving students, often perched high among the branches during their long stakeouts, combined their need for relaxation with their elemental studies in an ingenious way. They devised a card game, as enlightening as it is entertaining. The deck consists of cards each symbolizing the elements, exquisitely illustrated with scenes from nature. Engaged in the game, the Rangers discover and reinforce their understanding of the elements, while also indulging in a moment of friendly competition. This balance between relaxation and learning serves as a reminder that growth can occur even in the most relaxed settings.
Project: In this project, you are going to create (10) trading or playing cards, each showing one of the elements from the periodic table of elements.
The best way to begin is to look at examples, which you can find here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1nYNwZTELkshZzVMN82c0WaEUDk9k73y_/view?usp=sharing
Each playing card must list:
1.) Information from the Periodic Table.
2.) Number of protons, neutrons, electrons.
3.) Uses, and other interesting information about the element.
Each of the 10 cards must have color. Feel free to be creative and add pictures if you wish. You may want to use a higher quality paper, but you can use any resources available.
Note: This can be a physical or digital product. If you create digital cards in a program like Google Slides or Canva, you will need to print them out and turn them in on your own.
Show Mastery: Turn-in your cards and your guidebook page to a teacher for a mastery check. You must have all elements listed above.
What If I Don't Achieve Mastery?: If your project does not meet specifications you will be given back your product and asked to revise based on what is missing.
Quest #2: Arrow in Flight
At The Academy, the instructors task the Rangers with a new project. Their objective? To delve into the captivating science behind the flight of arrows, with the aim of refining their archery skills. As the Rangers embark on this exploration, they delve into the heart of natural laws that govern the world, subtly orchestrated by a long-gone, apple-loving scholar. They examine the force exerted on the arrow as they release it from the bow, how this energy propels the arrow forward, and the tug of the earth that inevitably brings it down. They also explore the way air resistance can alter the arrow's path. Through this practical understanding of motion, they strive to become master archers, their arrows almost dancing in the air as they find their mark. This exploration of the hidden rules that govern their craft is more than just a research project; it's a journey towards mastery.
Project: Research Newton's Laws of Motion, and then create a visual presentation about the topic. You can:
Create a Google Slideshow or Canva presentation about the topic.
Create a Poster or other visual aid (either physical or with a program like Canva.)
Create a video discussing the topic, (preferably with visuals to help demonstrate your points.)
Your presentation should include accurate information you've learned about the topic, as well visuals to illustrate ideas. It must discuss Newton's three laws of Motion.
Show Mastery: To show mastery, your presentation:
Must be detailed, and show that you put time/effort into the creation of this presentation/visual aid.
Must have text/pictures to illustrate your learning.
What If I Don't Achieve Mastery?: If your teacher does not thing that your presentation shows that you learned enough about the topic in your research, or that your presentation/visual aid doesn't meet requirements you'll be told to continue your work and turn-in again for a mastery check.

Quest #3: Trebuchet Triumph
Next on their agenda, the Rangers are led to the imposing southern ramparts of The Academy. Towering over the landscape, a line of trebuchets stands ready, their wooden frames groaning with potential energy. It's a rare privilege to handle these mighty siege engines, and the Rangers can feel a surge of anticipation. As they take their positions, they can't help but marvel at the intricate balance of forces at play. A single pull and the counterweight descends, the arm swings up, and the payload soars through the sky, tracing a graceful arc before crashing down upon the target. It's a lesson in physics, a testament to the power of levers and the art of launching.
Project:
1.) Click this link: to open VirtualTrebuchet 2.0 https://virtualtrebuchet.com/
2.) Conduct a series of experiments, record your findings, and try to answer the following questions. Take detailed notes on a sheet of paper to turn in that answer these questions.
A: What is the farthest distance you could throw the Baseball without red error text appearing at the bottom of the page? What modifications helped? What modifications hurt?
B: What is the farthest distance you could throw the Golf Ball without red error text appearing at the bottom of the page? What modifications helped? What modifications hurt?
C: What is the farthest distance you could throw the Pumpkin without red error text appearing at the bottom of the page? What modifications helped? What modifications hurt?
D: Could you make any modifications to get the trebuchet to throw the cow without red error text appearing at the bottom of the page? If so, how far could you throw it without any errors?
E: List any observations you found interesting. Try to connect what you've been doing with the Trebuchet Simulator to what you learned in Quest #2, or what you know about physics in general.
Show Mastery: Turn-in a detailed series of notes stating your observations on the Virtual Trebuchet project. Make sure that you carefully answer each of the questions above, and show several different strategies you tried for each item to increase distance flown.
What If I Don't Achieve Mastery?: If your notes are not detailed enough/if your observations are too basic, you may be given your notes back and asked to continue your simulation/observations.

This is something wilder, closer to the monsters and mysteries the other students grapple with. Your instructors, storied heroes all, beckon you towards the rustic bridge. As you step onto the creaking timber, the Arbor and its promise of thrilling adventures beyond the ordinary world beckons you deeper into its verdant heart.

Unlike other courses at the Academy, bound by parchment and lecture, your journey will extend far beyond these wooden walls. You're reassured that most of your time will be spent not in here, but out in the embrace of the wilds - learning the language of the wind and the secrets of the grand forest that encircles The Academy. The world, they remind you, is the truest classroom a ranger could hope for.

In the cool shade of the Arbor, you find your place in line with your fellow novices. Before you, targets have been set up at varying distances, their painted circles stark against the backdrop of the forest. This session is stripped down to the basics, the essence of being a ranger: the bow, the arrow, and the target. You feel the grain of the bow under your grip, the sleek fletching of the arrow against your cheek. With every inhale, you draw the bowstring; with every exhale, you let fly. The rhythmic thud of arrows finding their mark underscores the day, a reminder that amidst the fantastic, the fundamental skills hold strong. The session is traditional, yes, but a potent reminder that every ranger's journey begins with a single, well-aimed shot.

An inferno springs to life from its claws, engulfing the structure in flame. The chaos is immediate, the session forgotten. The instructors rush to douse the flames and ensure everyone's safety, their faces etched with confusion and concern. The bear retreats as quickly as it arrived, disappearing into the forest. Once the immediate danger passes, your instructors gather, their expressions grave. The Arbor is supposed to be protected by a magical field; how was this adversary able to get through it?
