Side Quests (Should Do) (Bonus Activities)
Side Quests are challenges you should do over the course of your time studying, they are completely optional. They will help you grow in your subject area, introduce you to resources that are helpful for studying on your own, and set a pace for you to move beyond what is expected for you at this grade level. Each "side quest" you complete earns you a set number of coins. (See the page discussing "The Market" in your guidebook.)
Side Quest #1: Dice of Destiny
As a member of the Magician class, your magic grows through your understanding of mathematic concepts, such as probability. One way to dive deeper into this topic is to craft a game of chance, blending your understanding of odds with your magical prowess. These aren't mere games; they're a path to growing your skill and intellect. As you play, you'll find that mastering probability doesn't just make you a better game-maker—it amplifies your magical power. Embrace the challenge, and let the games begin!
Practice: Create the prototype for a board game that specifically utilizes a d20 (20 sided dice.) Include information on the objective of the game, the setup, what pieces are required, how the d20 dice is utilized, winning conditions, etc. You can find a sample prototype created by a professor of The Academy that would meet the requirments. (Make sure your idea isn't just a copy of the one below, be creative!) You don't have to actually build the game, you just need to carefully plan it out.
Show Mastery: Follow the practice guidelines, and make sure you have all components described carefully.
What If I Don't Achieve Mastery?: If you are missing components for your game, your teacher/coach may ask you to add some aspects in.
Side Quest #2: Practice Your Path
All students at the Academy must challenge themselves and each other when training in the class they choose to explore. In this side quest you are tasked with coming up with a quiz challenging other magicians, beastmasters, knights, rangers, and bards in the knowledge they must know to progress in their path.
Practice: NOTE: You can only work on this side quest during after-school practice on Thursdays.
Your teacher will give you a set of questions from a previous competition. You will use this set of questions to create a test on Quizizz following the guidelines set forth by your teacher.
Show Mastery: Turn-in your Quizizz featuring real questions to your teacher/coach. They will check to make sure you meet the number of questions required and that the formatting is correct.
What If I Don't Achieve Mastery?: If you don't meet the requirements, you'll be asked to continue until you complete it as described.
Side Quest #3: Sorcery & Systems
At the markets outside of the walls of The Academy, students can find vendors selling small handheld gaming devices featuring adventures with surprising levels of depth and complexity. These devices have been imported in from the more technologically advanced lands across the far eastern ocean, and they are powered by very complex arcane runes and symbols that interact with the magics of this world.
Some of the instructors at The Academy believe that these devices distract Magicians-in-training from their learning. While these games focus on fun, many actually feature a lot of components that can be learned when you analyze the game a certain way. Your task is to specifically look at how these games utilize math, and write a brief paper commenting on how these games are actually beneficial for Magicians training at The Academy.
Practice: Write a paper at least one page in length discussing the various ways a specific real-world video game uses math systems, and teaches people playing the game aspects of math. Be specific, and use specific examples from the game. Go as in-depth as possible with your discussion specifically on how math is used and how the way it applies can serve to teach people playing the game.
(See example below)
Show Mastery: Make sure your paper is at least one page in length, and that it goes in-depth on how math is used in the systems present in the game, and how people can learn from it.
What If I Don't Achieve Mastery?: If you don't meet the requirements, you'll be asked to continue until you complete it as described.
