Main Quest Quarter 1 (Graded) (Must-Do Activities to Progress)
Main Quest Quarter 1 (Graded) (Must-Do Activities to Progress)
Welcome to the Main Quest! These are the self-paced activities you'll be completing to progress at The Academy for the 1st Quarter of the school year. This is not all you will be doing in day-to-day classes, but you'll have time specifically set-aside to work on these. Every "Quest," "Training Session," "Monster Hunt," and "Weekly Sparring Session," will earn you XP, or experience in your path of study.
These points are also an easy way to follow your grade in this part of the class. Anything over 140XP = 100% in this part of your grade. You can earn up to 150XP this quarter in the Main Quest, so you'll need to complete almost every activity. You can monitor your progress and grade by following your chart on Google Classroom!
Quest #1: Quizmaster
Within the hallowed chambers of The Tower, a new challenge takes shape—an intellectual crucible to test the Magicians' mastery. As the sparks of arcane knowledge ignite their minds, the Magicians are tasked with crafting a Quiz game that weaves intricate threads of math and magic into a tapestry of questions and puzzles.
Project: In this project, you will be creating a Jeopardy style quiz game related to any (or all) of the math topics discussed in the Training Sessions covered this quarter. (See Training Sessions Below.)
1.) Access the link below to the Google Slideshow presentation. Make a copy of the presentation for your Google Drive.
2.) Choose 5 Categories for your Jeopardy Game. You may wish to cover multiple topics from the training sessions this quarter, or go very in-depth advanced with one topic.
Show Mastery: Fill out your guide page, and share your finished product with your teacher.
What If I Don't Achieve Mastery?: If your project does not meet specifications you will be asked to go back and revise your work.
Quest #2: Taco Night
Amidst the arcane studies and spellcasting, an unexpected request illuminates The Academy's halls. The tantalizing aroma of a feast beckons as the cooks' ambition soars—Taco Night is on the horizon. With a blend of enthusiasm and curiosity, the culinary experts turn to the Magicians, recognizing their profound mastery of mathematics. Seeking the Magicians' keen analytical minds, they propose a quest to survey the diverse vendors that encircle The Academy's bustling Markets. Their goal? To pinpoint the ideal sources for the freshest ingredients, the most flavorful spices, and the most cost-effective offerings. It's a quest that combines mathematical precision with the delightful art of gastronomy.
Project: In this project, you'll be exploring the Taconomical Nationwide Map of Taco Bell menu prices to create a presentation on data/statistics of Taco Bell Menu Items.
Step 1.) Open the map at https://taconomical.com/
Step 2.) Create a new presentation in Google Slides to compile and present the data you collect. (You can also create a poster/posterboard or other physical method of showcasing this info.)
Step 3.) Choose (5) states, preferably from different regions across the United States. (You could use this https://www.mappr.co/political-maps/us-regions-map/ or other websites for an example of regions.)
Step 4.) Choose one menu item to analyze, collect at least (10) price samples from restaurants across that state.
Step 5.) Organize your presentation to show data from each state, including information like average price. (Mean/Median/Mode) Feel free to list interesting info like most/least expensive prices in that state.
Step 6.) Have a slide or two at the end of your own analysis. Which state that you examined had the highest price menu items on average? Which had the lowest? Which had the most difference in price within the state? Etc. List what conclusions you found interesting.
Show Mastery: To show mastery, your presentation should have extensive information about what you found. You should use math to calculate data/statistics related to your findings. You should have slides featuring your own analysis at the end of your presentation.
What If I Don't Achieve Mastery?: If your teacher doesn't think your presentation presents enough information or has other issues, you will be asked to refine it.
Quest #3: Weakness to Strength
In the quiet moments between spells and incantations, it becomes clear that every Magician, no matter how skilled, harbors their own vulnerabilities. Just as shadows dance within the brightest light, weaknesses flicker amidst arcane mastery. The path to becoming a true hero lies not only in harnessing power, but in recognizing these flaws and transforming them into strengths. Like a smith shaping a blade, Magicians must forge their abilities through rigorous study and self-reflection. It is in these diligent endeavors that they prepare for the battles yet to come, where their honed skills will shine as a beacon against the encroaching darkness.
Project: In this project, you will:
Step 1.) Identify a weakness you have in the KAAC math curriculum. Look through the (17) categories and choose the one you feel like you know the least about. https://kaac.com/governors-cup/middle-grades-curriculum/
Step 2.) Learn about that topic using resources available. Ex. Khan Academy, IXL, EdPuzzle, etc.
Step 3) Create a lesson about that topic, using Google Slides, Prezi, Canva, Adobe Express, or other platforms. You can record the lesson using video tools, or record a voiceover of you teaching the lesson that can accompany the lesson. You do not have to teach this live, but you need to present a digital visual aid you have created for the lesson like a slideshow or video, and have an audio component of you discussing/teaching your lesson. Ask your teacher if you need help.
Show Mastery: Share the lesson and audio you have created with your teacher. It must complete steps 1-3.
What If I Don't Achieve Mastery?: If your lesson does not meet the requirements or has other issues, your teacher may ask you to go back and refine it.

As their steps weave through the ancient woodland, his words weave a tapestry of experience, imparting the knowledge that true power is forged not merely in the tower's chambers, but in the crucible of the wild. Under the watchful eyes of their mentors, the Magicians embark on a remarkable endeavor, fusing their growing mastery of math-infused magic with the primal forces of the elements. Within the spacious training room, arcane equations etched into the floor come alive with shimmering energy. With focused intent and precise calculations, the Magicians conjure minuscule storm clouds that crackle with elemental power. Raindrops form, suspended in mid-air, and lightning arcs between the cloud's edges. The room rumbles with controlled thunder as the Magicians manipulate the very forces of nature.

A palpable unease fills the training chambers as the trainee Magicians catch sight of their mentors gathered around a door. Chains that once secured it lie shattered on the floor. Murmurs of concern circulate among the mentors, their voices hinting at the escape of something referred to only as "It" from the dungeons. Worried expressions mark their faces, conveying the severity of the situation. In hushed tones, the mentors speculate that "It" may have slipped beyond The Tower's confines, retreating to the encompassing woods to plot its next moves. An air of uncertainty and mystery hangs over the scene, leaving the trainees to wonder about the nature of this elusive entity and the implications of its escape.

The trainee Magicians gather one last time, their minds enriched with the fusion of math and magic. Yet, before the transition to the next phase, a momentous lesson remains. A distinguished visitor, a practitioner of unparalleled prowess, graces them with their presence. With a flourish of incantations that dance like poetry, the visitor weaves intricate symbols in the air. From the very essence of nothingness, they conjure a blazing dragon, a creature of flame and raw elemental force. Its fiery wings unfurl with a deafening roar, casting an awe-struck glow upon the trainees' faces. This unforgettable display serves as both a culmination of their training and a tantalizing glimpse into the heights their own skills can reach, as they prepare to forge their destinies as true Magicians of The Academy.
