Main Quest Quarter 2 (Graded) (Must-Do Activities to Progress)
Main Quest Quarter 2 (Graded) (Must-Do Activities to Progress)
Welcome to the Main Quest! These are the self-paced activities you'll be completing to progress at The Academy for the 2nd Quarter of the school year. This is not all you will be doing in day-to-day classes, but you'll have time specifically set-aside to work on these. Every "Quest," "Training Session," "Monster Hunt," and "Weekly Sparring Session," will earn you XP, or experience in your path of study.
These points are also an easy way to follow your grade in this part of the class. Anything over 140XP = 100% in this part of your grade. You can earn up to 150XP this quarter in the Main Quest, so you'll need to complete almost every activity. You can monitor your progress and grade by following your chart on Google Classroom!
Quest #1: Labyrinth Layout
Beneath The Academy lies its ever-evolving marvel: The Labyrinth, a maze reshaped quarterly by the magic of its students. As a blend of artistry and arcanum, magicians collaboratively design its twisting passages and enigmatic challenges. With the approval of Academy elders, these designs are then brought to life through spells, ensuring the maze remains an unpredictable test of skill and wit. This dynamic Labyrinth stands not just as a challenge but as a testament to the fusion of imagination and magical prowess.
Project: See the attached PDF for full details on this project. You will need to construct your labyrinth and present your product either in a physical or digital format, with all specifications completed.
Show Mastery: Fill out your guide page, and share your finished product with your teacher.
What If I Don't Achieve Mastery?: If your project does not meet specifications you will be asked to go back and revise your work.
Quest #2: Mystery Quest - Student Reading
Amidst the rigorous training and studies, students of The Academy find solace and inspiration in the age-old tales of heroism and valor. Diverse in scope and transcending class boundaries, these stories serve as a beacon, illuminating the ideals that the Academy cherishes. From audacious Bards to tenacious Knights, each tale is a testament to the indomitable spirit, reminding scholars of the heights they too might reach in their own journeys.
Project: Students at The Academy will all be reading a book together as part of the One Book, One School project at SCMS. This will count as Quest #2 for all classes. It will also count for a separate (important) grade as part of school/class requirements.
Note: This Quest will be completed in-class over several weeks. You may have to read some for homework if you do not complete in class. NOTE: This quest begins at the same time the assignment starts for all other students in the school.
Show Mastery: Complete the reading entries as required in class.
What If I Don't Achieve Mastery?: You may be asked to go back and re-read/complete chapters.
Quest #3: Mystery Quest - Student Writing
At the midpoint of their Academy year, an enigmatic task awaits every student. More than a mere exam or written assignment, it's a rite of passage, veiled in mystery, beckoning students to plumb the depths of their understanding. The true nature of this challenge remains concealed, but one thing is certain: one's grasp of their class and knowledge acquired will be thoroughly tested. It's whispered that this test not only gauges academic prowess but something deeper within each scholar.
Project: Students at The Academy will be tasked with a final Quest near the very end of Quarter 3. This will involve the student writing about something they have learned as part of their class this quarter. More details will follow.
Note: This Quest will be completed in-class. You will not have to work on this for homework.
Show Mastery: Complete the quest assignment as directed in-class.
What If I Don't Achieve Mastery?: If your quest assignment does not meet guidelines set in-class, you will be asked to complete it and turn it in again.
Training Session #1 - MATH 1.9 Constant of Proportionality
You did it! You completed your first quarter of training at the Academy and leveled up your skills in a class. You decide to begin Quarter 2 training as a member of the Magician class.
As you are no longer an initiate at The Academy and have become a full-fledged member, you join other students of your class to listen to the opening speech from the Magician Grandmaster, the most powerful Magician at The Academy, (and likely on the western continent as a whole.)
He notes that much of his attention, and the attention of the other highest trainers and masters of The Academy is focused on investigating a growing threat across the Eastern Ocean. Since the most powerful members of The Academy are investigating this mysterious threat, they task you and the other first-year students with investigating a threat closer to home.
A strange corruption has begun to take root in the forest surrounding The Academy. Each class will tackle a separate issue while simultaneously training to discover the reason the forest grows darker and more threatening.
All First-Year Students 🍄will battle the strange new corrupted monsters of the forest in order to keep the Academy and nearby lands safe.
Members of the Bard Class 🎵 will do what they can to protect the wildlife of the forest this quarter. While this may seem a task more suited for members of the Ranger Class, or Beastmasters, Bards will protect the wildlife as a whole.
Members of the Beastmaster Class 🐍 will try to use their bonds with creatures to try to learn what they can from the strange creatures and corrupted wildlife.
Members of the Knight Class ⚔️ will try to keep the peace within and outside the walls of The Academy. This strange new evil is unsettling the people, and it is up to them to make sure the peaceful lives of the citizens are not interrupted.
Members of the Ranger Class 🏹will be studying the strange chemical composition of the corruption threatening the forest in an attempt to discover a remedy for the parts already negatively impacted.
Members of the Magician Class 🧙will be attempting to unseal a strange door deep within one of the most dangerous parts of the corrupted forest, to hopefully uncover a hidden source of the problem.
Good Luck!

Training Session #2 - MATH 1.10 Factoring Trinomials
Just days ago, no map or tale spoke of its existence, yet deep within the heart of the corrupted forest now stands an enigma. A stone door, seemingly ancient in its construct, etched with intricate runes that whisper of forgotten epochs. Though it bears the weight and wear of millennia, it paradoxically appeared overnight, leaving even the eldest of The Academy in befuddled astonishment.
The Magician students are abuzz with theories and speculations. Could this sudden emergence be intertwined with the spreading corruption? Does the door serve as a harbinger, or perhaps, as a potential solution to the forest's blight?

Training Session #3 - MATH 1.11 Slope and Y Intercept
Amidst the throngs of experts and scholars pouring over ancient texts and manuscripts, a particular figure stands out - Arcanist Robert. Known throughout The Academy for his unparalleled expertise in the esoteric and intricate languages of magic, Robert's insights have illuminated many a darkened path.
As the runes on the enigmatic door come under his scrutiny, his fingers trace the curves and edges of each glyph, his eyes narrowing in deep concentration. A murmured incantation escapes his lips, causing the air to ripple slightly around him. The runes seem to shimmer in response, their outlines glowing faintly.
"The key," he finally declares, his voice echoing through the stillness of the gathered crowd, "lies in the elemental embrace of fire."
Robert posits that the runes, ancient and cryptic, aren't just indicative signs or mere symbols. They are reactant sigils, waiting to be awakened by the precise touch of fire magic. This revelation leads the Magician Class on a new path. Harnessing fire magic might not just unlock the door but could also reveal deeper truths about the sudden appearance of this portal and its potential connection to the corruption blighting the forest. The question remains: who among them possesses the skill and finesse to safely wield such potent magic upon the door?

Training Session #4 - MATH 1.12 Angles
High atop The Academy, in a grand chamber bathed in the warm hues of flickering flames, resides Ember, The Master Fire Mage. Her reputation precedes her, tales of her unparalleled control over fire magic a staple among hushed conversations in The Academy's hallways. Her chamber's ceiling is painted with the phases of the sun, and walls adorned with artistry depicting grand fires and phoenixes rising from ashes.
Approaching her for aid is no small feat; her demeanor is one of someone perpetually preoccupied with her own vast realms of thoughts and magical experiments. Initially, when presented with the tale of the strange door and the encroaching forest corruption, she merely offers a fleeting, disinterested glance.
However, the mere mention of the reactant runes shifts the atmosphere in the room. Her eyes, usually reminiscent of a calm fireplace, spark with an intensity, mirroring the fierce flames of a roaring blaze.
"Reactant to fire magic, you say?" she muses, her voice crackling like burning wood. "And not just any fire magic, but the most potent?"
Interest piqued, she rises from her ornate throne-like chair, her robes leaving trails of warm embers behind. Agreeing to assist, Ember recognizes that the situation could be an intriguing challenge, even for someone of her unmatched prowess.

Training Session #5 - MATH 1.13 Circumference and Area of a Circle
Before the towering stone door, a hush falls among the gathered Magician Class as Ember steps forth. With a focused gaze, she extends her hand, summoning a vibrant orange flame that dances and twirls, casting shadows upon the inscriptions of the door. But as the fiery tendrils brush against the ancient runes, no change occurs.
Undeterred, Ember's expression hardens. The serene orange of her fire intensifies, transitioning to a fierce azure blue that illuminates the surrounding forest with an otherworldly glow. As the blue flames envelop the door, a resonating hum emanates, growing in volume until, with a cacophonous roar, the stone door shudders and then swings open.
The path ahead reveals a dimly lit, sprawling hallway, its floor entirely submerged under murky waters. Ripples echo the group's collective gasp as the smell of stagnant water fills the air. However, with Ember leading, the venture does not halt. Channeling her fiery prowess once more, she summons torrents of scalding steam, evaporating the waters to unveil the submerged pathway.
Step by step, the Magician Class delves deeper, guided by Ember's radiant light.

Training Session #6 - MATH 1.14 - Pythagorean Theorem
The chamber, unlike the rest of the cavern, feels eerily out of place. Its architecture is jarringly pristine, the floor's reflective surface creating an unsettling illusion of infinity. The portal-like structure in its center pulses with an indescribable energy, a beacon of enigma in the heart of the submerged cavern.
But it's Ember's reaction that chills everyone to the bone.
"It can't be!" The Master Fire Mage's voice is barely above a whisper, her usually controlled demeanor shattered, eyes wide with recognition and horror. Before anyone can press for answers, her voice takes on a sharp, commanding edge. "We need to leave! Now!"
Confusion and fear grip the accompanying Magicians, but Ember's urgency leaves no room for questions. As they rush back down the corridor they'd just traversed, Ember's flames blaze wilder than ever. The once-blue, controlled inferno now seethes in chaotic reds and yellows, consuming the ancient stone and murals in its wrath.
With each incendiary step Ember takes, more of the cavern's history is lost, the passages collapsing in a cacophony of destruction. The searing heat at their backs pushes the group forward, the roar of the inferno and Ember's focused determination a stark reminder of the gravity of their discovery.
Emerging into the corrupted forest, the cavern's entrance implodes in a final explosive display of Ember's might. She stands there, panting, eyes haunted but resolute. Though she remains tight-lipped about the chamber's significance, one thing is clear: the Magician Class had unknowingly stumbled upon something far more sinister than the forest's corruption. And whatever it was, Ember was willing to obliterate a piece of history to ensure it remained buried.

Training Session #7 - MATH 1.15 Growing by a Percentage
The forest clearing, once dominated by the stone door and cavern entrance, now lay in smoldering ruins. Flames still clung stubbornly to the rock, an unnatural sight that defied the very laws of nature. Ember's power was undeniable, and the aftermath of her inferno was a testament to the magnitude of her might and the depth of her fear.
As the Magician Class and Ember made their way back to The Academy, you lingered a moment longer, drawn by an inexplicable pull to the still-smoldering site. The world around seemed to quiet, and in that eerie silence, a soft, rhythmic thudding reached your ears. It pulsed from deep within the earth, like the heartbeat of some colossal creature or the drumming of an ancient ritual.

Training Session #8 - MATH 1.16 - Probability
Days after the cataclysmic events at the cavern, curiosity once again drew you back to the site. Nature had begun to reclaim the charred grounds, but the memories of that day still hung heavily in the air.
Amongst the rubble and regrowth, something caught your eye. Half-buried beneath a slab of stone, a gentle luminescence beckoned. Extracting it from its earthen cradle, you discovered a peculiar stone, its core pulsing with a fiery glow reminiscent of Ember's own inferno. As your fingers brushed its surface, a surge of warmth traveled up your arm. A newfound connection to fire magic ignited within, a raw yet exhilarating power.
Pondering its origin and purpose, you sought out Arcanist Robert, whose understanding of runes and artifacts was unrivaled. Upon seeing the stone, his brow furrowed, recognition and concern evident in his eyes.
Deciding it was best kept out of curious hands, Robert pledged to place the stone in the secure confines of The Academy's vaults. As he took the stone, a shared understanding passed between you two - the forest's corruption might be the immediate threat, but countless other mysteries, like the strange portal in the cave and this odd stone remain unsolved.

Beastmaster students will have the additional challenge of ensuring their animated animal companions don't get too curious around the paint pots, resulting in accidental art splatters or spilled palettes. With every brushstroke, competitors will showcase a different side of their skills, revealing vulnerability, passion, and imagination in ways the Academy has never seen before. Who will craft the masterpiece that captures the heart of the Academy?

Weekly Sparring Session #7
In the heart of an autumn-hued field, an ensemble of geometrically-perfect geodesic domes stands tall, each crafted immaculately from a rare, uniform wood. As the next sparring session dawns, combatants are enclosed within these wooden structures. The only way out? Dismantle the dome from within. As participants work to break apart their confinements, the field soon reverberates with the echoing thuds of striking and splintering wood. While Knights might use sheer strength to rupture the dome's facets, Rangers could employ precision to target weak points. The unpredictable nature of this sparring session means that once the wooden shards settle, fighters could emerge anywhere and at any time, making for dynamic and unexpected bouts of skill and wit in the midst of the autumn splendor.

Weekly Sparring Session #8
Venturing far from the familiar, the final sparring session of the quarter is set amidst the very nexus of malevolence: the darkest, most corrupted part of the forest encircling The Academy. The atmosphere here is dense with a sinister energy, and the trees seem to whisper twisted secrets. But with risk comes potential reward. The Academy's higher-ups theorize that the sheer force of magical and physical combat might pierce through the darkness and unveil hidden truths about the forest's ailment. As students clash amidst the withered flora and tainted terrain, every spell cast, every blade swung, and every note sung is imbued with the dual purpose of triumph in combat and the desperate hope of restoring the woods. This session is not just about prowess but a fervent plea to the heart of the forest to reveal its mysteries.
