Main Quest Quarter 2 (Graded) (Must-Do Activities to Progress)

Welcome to the Main Quest! These are the self-paced activities you'll be completing to progress at The Academy for the 2nd Quarter of the school year. This is not all you will be doing in day-to-day classes, but you'll have time specifically set-aside to work on these. Every "Quest," "Training Session," "Monster Hunt," and "Weekly Sparring Session," will earn you XP, or experience in your path of study.

These points are also an easy way to follow your grade in this part of the class. Anything over 140XP = 100% in this part of your grade. You can earn up to 150XP this quarter in the Main Quest, so you'll need to complete almost every activity. You can monitor your progress and grade by following your chart on Google Classroom

Quest #1: Beasts' Ballads

As a Beastmaster student, your rooms at The Academy sit adjacent to the rooms inhabited by the Bard class students.

Despite their best intentions, these students often fall short when it comes to songwriting, especially the ones that weren't transported here from Earth like you were. Their tunes may be enchanting, but the lyrics leave much to be desired.

Poetry in this world lacks the depth and nuance once found on Earth, with many verses feeling clichéd or elementary. Recognizing this, you decide to compile a book of sophisticated and diverse poems, titled "Beasts' Ballads". Your hope is that by sharing these intricate verses and rich narratives, the Bards will find inspiration to elevate their songwriting, making their performances not only a treat for the ears but also for the soul.

1.) It must have at least (7) total poems. Each must be different and come from the list below. You may have to do a little research and look for examples to model your poems off of.

2.) The topics of the poems should have some sort of connection to The Academy, the fantasy world our adventure is set in, beasts/animals/creatures/monsters, or the other classes at The Academy, (Bards, Knights, Magicians, Rangers,) what it's like to live in a world without modern conveniences, etc. Be creative here, there are very few restrictions on what this has to look like.

Acrostic: The first letter of each line spells out a word or message.

Haiku: A three-line Japanese poem with a 5-7-5 syllable count, often focusing on nature.

Limerick: A five-line humorous poem with a distinct AABBA rhyme scheme.

Sonnet: A 14-line poem, often about love, with various rhyme schemes depending on the style (e.g., Shakespearean, Petrarchan).

Free Verse: Poetry that doesn't adhere to a particular rhyme scheme or meter, allowing for more natural expression.

Narrative: Tells a story, much like a short story but in verse form.

Concrete or Shape: The words on the page are arranged to form a visual image related to the poem's subject.

Diamante: A diamond-shaped poem of seven lines that contrasts two opposite subjects.

Tanka: A traditional Japanese poem similar to haiku but with lines of 5-7-5-7-7 syllables.

Cinquain: A five-line poem with specific syllable counts or word counts per line.

Elegy: A poem of mourning, typically for someone who has died.

Ballad: Tells a story in short stanzas and is often set to music.

Ode: A lyrical poem that celebrates or praises its subject.

Rondeau: A short, repeating line form of French origin.

Sestina: A complex French verse form, usually unrhymed, consisting of six stanzas of six lines each and a three-line envoy.

Slam/Spoken Word: Written to be performed and judged by an audience.

Quest #2: Mystery Quest - Student Reading

Amidst the rigorous training and studies, students of The Academy find solace and inspiration in the age-old tales of heroism and valor. Diverse in scope and transcending class boundaries, these stories serve as a beacon, illuminating the ideals that the Academy cherishes. From audacious Bards to tenacious Knights, each tale is a testament to the indomitable spirit, reminding scholars of the heights they too might reach in their own journeys.

Note: This Quest will be completed in-class over several weeks. You may have to read some for homework if you do not complete in class. NOTE: This quest begins at the same time the assignment starts for all other students in the school.

Quest #3: Mystery Quest - Student Writing

At the midpoint of their Academy year, an enigmatic task awaits every student. More than a mere exam or written assignment, it's a rite of passage, veiled in mystery, beckoning students to plumb the depths of their understanding. The true nature of this challenge remains concealed, but one thing is certain: one's grasp of their class and knowledge acquired will be thoroughly tested. It's whispered that this test not only gauges academic prowess but something deeper within each scholar.

Note: This Quest will be completed in-class. You will not have to work on this for homework.

Training Session #1 - LA 1.9 Contemporary YA Fiction

You did it! You completed your first quarter of training at the Academy and leveled up your skills in a class. You decide to begin Quarter 2 training as a member of the Beastmaster class.

As you are no longer an initiate at The Academy and have become a full-fledged member, you join other students of your class to listen to the opening speech from the Beastmaster Lord, the most powerful Beastmaster at The Academy, (and likely on the western continent as a whole.)

He notes that much of his attention, and the attention of the other highest trainers and masters of The Academy is focused on investigating a growing threat across the Eastern Ocean. Since the most powerful members of The Academy are investigating this mysterious threat, they task you and the other first-year students with investigating a threat closer to home.

A strange corruption has begun to take root in the forest surrounding The Academy. Each class will tackle a separate issue while simultaneously training to discover the reason the forest grows darker and more threatening.

All First-Year Students 🍄will battle the strange new corrupted monsters of the forest in order to keep the Academy and nearby lands safe.

Members of the Bard Class 🎵 will do what they can to protect the wildlife of the forest this quarter. While this may seem a task more suited for members of the Ranger Class, or Beastmasters, Bards will protect the wildlife as a whole.

Members of the Beastmaster Class 🐍 will try to use their bonds with creatures to try to learn what they can from the strange creatures and corrupted wildlife.

Members of the Knight Class ⚔️ will try to keep the peace within and outside the walls of The Academy. This strange new evil is unsettling the people, and it is up to them to make sure the peaceful lives of the citizens are not interrupted.

Members of the Ranger Class 🏹will be studying the strange chemical composition of the corruption threatening the forest in an attempt to discover a remedy for the parts already negatively impacted.

Members of the Magician Class 🧙will be attempting to unseal a strange door deep within one of the most dangerous parts of the corrupted forest, to hopefully uncover a hidden source of the problem.

Good Luck!

Training Session #2 - LA 1.10 Contemporary YA NonFiction

First-year Beastmaster students at The Academy have been tasked with reaching out to the creature of the forest to try to discover the source of the corruption impacting the forest surrounding The Academy. Beastmaster students are usually practical, and asking for help is almost always a smart move.

Enter Sir Pounce, a legend in his own right. Standing with the grace inherent to his feline lineage, he was no ordinary cat. Cloaked in miniature knightly armor, gleaming in the dappled sunlight, he bore the title of Kitty Cat Knight with pride and dignity. His whiskers twitched with intelligence, his eyes, sharp and observant, missed no detail.

When the Beastmasters approached him, Sir Pounce listened intently, his tail flicking thoughtfully. Recognizing the gravity of the situation and the unique perspective he offered as a bridge between two worlds, he gave a dignified nod, signaling his commitment to the quest.

"I have felt the disturbance," he mewed in a surprisingly deep voice, "both as a protector of The Academy and as a creature of these woods. Together, we will trace the roots of this blight."

With Sir Pounce at their side, the Beastmaster students felt bolstered, hopeful. Their journey had taken a promising turn, and with the insights of the Kitty Cat Knight, they were one step closer to deciphering the enigma of the forest's corruption.

Training Session #3 - LA 1.11 Famous Poets and Poetry

The deeper the Beastmaster Class ventured into the forest, the more palpable the corruption became. Once-verdant expanses now lay shrouded in shadow, the very earth beneath them tainted, a stark contrast to the vibrant flora of days past. Trees that had stood tall for centuries now wept dark, viscous tears, while underbrush emanated an ominous blackness.

Amidst this desolation, a rustling caught their attention. From the undergrowth emerged a creature unlike any they had ever seen. Its skin was a mottled grey, contrasting sharply with the surrounding darkness. Its oversized, bulbous eyes glistened with a combination of fear and curiosity, absorbing its surroundings in a way that was almost unnerving.

A collective gasp went through the Beastmaster group, their initial instinct one of caution. Yet, harnessing their deep-rooted training and connection to creatures, they slowly approached. Gentle whispers and gestures, combined with an innate understanding of the beast's nature, worked wonders. The creature, sensing no immediate threat, began to relax, its tense posture softening.

But as quickly as the encounter began, it ended. With a swift, fluid motion, the creature retreated into the undergrowth. Left behind was its nest, a simple construction of forest materials, but at its center lay a peculiar object, a small egg covered in an eerie black ooze.

Training Session #4 - LA 1.12 Famous Poets and Poetry Part 2

You stop at a nearby shack to examine the egg further. This forest shack, usually a place of rest and preparation for the Ranger Class, now took on an aura of tense anticipation. Laid upon a rustic wooden table, the corrupted egg seemed almost out of place amidst the simple surroundings. Its surface, mottled with dark patterns, pulsed irregularly, like a heart fighting against an encroaching darkness.

With a deep breath, you leaned closer, and almost immediately, your mind was awash with faint whispers. A sensation not unlike tendrils seemed to reach out, trying to entwine your thoughts. As you concentrated, broken words began to coalesce, forming fragmented sentences, desperate pleas:

"...Save... Forest... Darkness... THE FACES GATHER "

What could this mean? Before you could ponder further, the quiet ambiance of the shack was violently disrupted.

The door, once securely shut, was thrust open with great force, revealing a figure framed by the dim light outside. Clad in armor, both intricate and weathered, the knight radiated an aura of power and purpose. No emblem adorned their shield or armor, rendering their allegiance a mystery. Their gaze, sharp and penetrating, fixed directly on the pulsing egg.

You instinctively moved to shield the mysterious object, heart racing. Sir Pounce had left the shack earlier to scout nearby, and without his guidance and in unfamiliar territory, the situation was precarious at best. The knight remained silent, but their intent was clear. You only have time to let out the beginnings of a whistle to call your wolf companion for help before the knight strikes.

Training Session #5 - LA 1.13 Plays, Playwrights, Speeches

The impact was swift and sudden. One moment, you stood defiantly against the intruding knight, and the next, you were propelled through the air with an unnatural force. The walls of the cabin splintered upon impact, offering no resistance to the momentum. The world blurred around you as you soared, the ground and sky melding in a dizzying whirl of colors.

When you finally collided with the earth, the shock reverberated through your entire body. Dazed, your vision began to darken, the edges clouded by an encroaching void. But even in that semi-conscious state, you could make out the figure of the knight, moving with purposeful strides. The precious, corrupted egg, the key to so many unanswered questions, gleamed ominously in his grasp.

You see him lift his helmet and strangely, he seems to breath on the egg, his face obscured from your sight. The egg goes from a mottled white and black to completely black. He pockets it and walks away quickly as you struggle to stay awake.

Training Session #6 - LA 1.14 Plays, Playwrights, Speeches Part 2

In your vulnerable state, the familiar figure of Sir Pounce emerged from the forest, flanked unexpectedly by a formidable squad from The Academy: twenty Knights and twenty Rangers, a full squad out on patrol. It seemed a twist of fate had brought them together at this crucial juncture.

You hurriedly recounted the events, pointing out the direction the mysterious knight had taken. Though injured and unable to join the fray, you called upon your bond with your wolf companion, sharing its vision to witness the imminent confrontation.

As Sir Pounce and the Academy's forces surged forward, you hope that this battle will end in their favor. The focus was clear: reclaim the stolen artifact. Through your wolf's eyes, the battle's fervor and the relentless pursuit of the elusive knight began to unfold.

Training Session #7 - LA 1.15 Plays, Playwrights, Speeches Part 3

The forest was transformed into an arena of otherworldly combat. The mysterious knight moved with a fluidity that seemed to defy the natural laws of the world you knew. He blinked in and out of existence, each reappearance marked by another fallen defender from The Academy. The display was both astonishing and terrifying.

The prowess of the Academy's elite was undeniable. They unleashed Knight and Ranger techniques you had never even heard of. Such power and skill, and yet they were constantly on their back foot.

Then, in a moment that shifted the tide of battle, Sir Pounce, with a burst of energy, blurred into multiple mirror images of himself, each as real and tangible as the other. With synchronized precision, they pounced, converging on the mysterious knight from all angles. The force of their assault made contact, causing the knight to momentarily falter.

Suddenly, in a swirl of inky smoke, the knight's form disintegrated, his essence shooting upward and dispersing like a dark mist. But there, where he once stood, lay the strange dark egg, untouched by the mayhem around it. Without missing a beat, your wolf companion, loyal and perceptive, snatched it up in its jaws, ensuring its safety amidst the chaos.

Training Session #8 - LA 1.9 Short Stories

Under the skilled touch of the Academy's healers, your injuries started to mend at a pace that would be deemed miraculous in any other world. The warmth of their magic surged through you, stitching up wounds and soothing the pain.

In the quieter moments that followed, you sat down with Sir Pounce, the dark egg between you both. Its once pulsating aura now felt subdued, almost hollow. You reached out with your senses, hoping to catch even the faintest whisper of the presence you'd felt earlier. But there was nothing. The link was severed, the entity inside gone.

Sir Pounce, with his innate sensitivity to the mystical, shared your sentiment. His usual confident gaze was replaced by one of melancholy. The air was thick with unsaid words and shared understanding. Without prompting, you handed the egg to him. It felt right that he be its guardian, to keep its secrets and remember its mysteries.

The forest's corruption continued to cast its shadow, but this particular chapter, with all its bafflements and revelations, was closed... for now.

Training Sessions for Students Interested in Written Composition

At the heart of The Academy, renowned for churning out the finest Beastmasters, a unique transformation is underway. A faction of these Beastmaster students, known for their prowess in persuading creatures of the wild, has ventured into the realm of the written word, inaugurating the Academy's very first Writer's Guild.

These Beastmasters recognized a parallel between calming a fearsome beast and appealing to the human heart and mind. Their logic was simple: if they could convince creatures to align with the forces of good, why not apply that same persuasive power to sway human thoughts, opinions, and actions towards benevolence and justice?

The Writer's Guild thus became a workshop for these evolving Beastmasters. They studied the nuances of language, the power of a well-crafted narrative, and the art of rhetoric. Just as they would decipher the subtle growls of a griffin or the chirps of a phoenix, they began to understand the arguments needed to convince others and sway opinions.

Monster Hunt #1

Opponent: The Gossamer Phantasm Sprite

Amidst the towering titans and elusive shadows of the forest, a seemingly innocent presence flutters. The Gossamer Phantasm Sprite, adorned with a cloth reminiscent of a classic ghostly guise, deceives with its deceptive charm. Its tiny, enchanting eyes and diminutive stature belie its mischievous intent. When approached, these sprites unleash a wailing cry that reverberates throughout the forest, calling forth their hidden kin. As a horde, they possess an eerie power, entrancing those who underestimate them based on appearance alone.

Monster Hunt #2

Opponent: The Decaying Gloomgaze Goblin

In the damp and shadowed underbelly of the forest, the Decaying Gloomgaze Goblin lurks, its greyish-blue skin a ghastly hue in the twilight. The eerie glow of its eyes pierces through the gloom, lending an unsettling aura to its already grotesque visage. It’s not just the grotesque appearance that unnerves, but the erratic, unpredictable movements that come with it. Beastmaster students, alongside their creature companions, find themselves facing not just a physical challenge, but a test of resolve against the eerie, unsettling presence of the Gloomgaze Goblin. This hunt teaches the importance of maintaining focus, and the grim reality that decay can sometimes harbor a lingering, menacing spite.

Monster Hunt #3

Opponent: The Stony-Eyed Rockroot

Nestled atop moss-covered boulders, the Stony-Eyed Rockroots peer out with their comical, oversized eyes. Yet, beneath their whimsical facade lies a surprising threat: the ability to fling stones with astounding precision. Beastmaster students, aided by their creature companions, must navigate this barrage, strategizing to approach and disarm these rocky foes. This encounter teaches the importance of not underestimating adversaries based on appearance and the value of adaptability in the wild.

Monster Hunt #4

Opponent: The Porcine Arcane Apprentice

In a dimly lit grove, shadowed by mystic sigils, stands the Porcine Arcane Apprentice. This upright pig, draped in darkened robes, wields a staff crackling with a more menacing energy than his title suggests. As he casts spells with growing proficiency, the forest quivers, hinting at a power beyond mere apprenticeship. Babbling incessantly about an impending decay destined to consume both the forest and The Academy, he poses a real threat to those who cross his path. Beastmaster students, with their creature companions, must carefully approach this deranged caster, all while deciphering his ominous warnings.

Monster Hunt #5

Opponent: The Granite Moth Guardian

Hovering silently over the forest's rocky terrains is the Granite Moth Guardian, its stone-like wings shimmering faintly under the canopy. Contrasting its earthen body, it boasts piercing yellow and black eyes that seem to see through the very soul of intruders. When provoked, this stony moth can unleash a flurry of razor-sharp wing shards, making it a formidable opponent despite its delicate appearance. Beastmaster students and their creature companions face a dual challenge: avoiding the moth's rapid aerial strikes while deciphering the intent behind its mesmerizing gaze. This hunt teaches the importance of agility, observation, and the understanding that beauty can often mask hidden dangers.

Monster Hunt #6

Opponent: The Rotten Hollowmare

Amidst the lingering mists of the forest's forgotten groves, the Rotten Hollowmare shambles forth, an appalling embodiment of decay and darkness. Its body, a grotesque amalgamation of bumps and growths, moves with an eerie purpose on two cursed feet. The cavernous maw it bears reveals a nightmarish array of gnashing teeth, and its black, sunken eyes glow ominously with an eerie white light, hinting at some lost but malicious intent. The sight of it alone is a terror to behold, a grim specter of what the land might become should decay overtake the vibrancy of life.

Monster Hunt #7

Opponent: The Undying Mercenary and Crispy

In a sinister clearing, Beastmaster students stumble upon a ghastly alliance: The Undying Mercenary, a zombie soldier from ancient times, alongside his manic pet chicken, Crispy. The Mercenary's decomposing form belies the  dexterity he maintains with his tarnished blade, while Crispy, frenzied and feather-bare, dashes erratically amidst the confrontation. The battle is as bizarre as it is harrowing. Upon their defeat, the students discover a chilling note clutched in the Mercenary's bony hand, scrawled in a shaky, morbid script. It speaks of a malevolent scheme to capture Academy students for some nefarious purpose. This eerie revelation sends a ripple of fear and resolve through the Beastmasters: the forest holds threats twisted by dark intent, requiring vigilance and unity to confront and vanquish.

Monster Hunt #8

Opponent: The Cursed Heartwood Fiend

At the core of a blighted glade lies the sinister source of much of the forest's decay: The Cursed Heartwood Fiend. This malevolent tree towers menacingly, its massive visage embedded within the trunk, staring with a malevolent glee at those who dare challenge its dominion. Its wild cackles resonate through the twisted boughs, a mocking anthem of despair amidst the creeping blight. With every enraged scream, it unleashes a torrent of corruption-spreading spores; with every spiteful laugh, it swings its gnarled branches with a force capable of complete destruction.

As Beastmaster students and their creature companions confront this arboreal horror, they face not merely a foe but the very essence of forest corruption. The battle is a frantic dance of evasion and attack, a test of both their valor and their understanding of the forest's deeper, darker secrets. By challenging the Heartwood Fiend, they hope to stem the tide of decay, aiming to restore the woodlands and protect the bounds of the Academy.

Boasting multi-level platforms and rigged pulley systems, Magicians may find the elevated spaces advantageous for channeling spells from a distance. Knights, on the other hand, will need to navigate the tight corridors backstage, potentially limiting their mobility. Rangers, with their keen senses, could make the most of the shadowy wings and props. Beastmasters, watch your animal companions with the stage mechanisms! It's a setting where theatrical finesse can be as crucial as martial skill. Don't miss this blend of drama and duel!

Weekly Sparring Session #3

Head over to the bustling Market for a sparring session with a twist: this is a battle not of swords, but of words! As students stand atop wooden crates and beckon the crowd, they must weave tales, pitch ideas, and entertain an eager audience of townsfolk. While Bards may have an edge with their musical background, Magicians could captivate with a sprinkling of minor spells to emphasize their points. Rangers, with their firsthand tales from the forest, have countless adventures to recount. Knights, embodying valor and chivalry, can narrate tales of bravery. Who will win the crowd's favor and be deemed the most entertaining? Join us and be swept up in the oratory combat!

Weekly Sparring Session #4

Venture to the testing grounds for a high-octane sparring session against the Clockwork Beasts of Alev! Crafted with precision by the ingenious Gnomes, these mechanical marvels are as beautiful as they are deadly. With spinning gears, sharpened claws, and steam-driven agility, each beast offers a unique challenge. Students will compete to see who can dismantle the most machines without suffering a scratch. Beastmasters may find their animal companions invaluable for distraction, while Magicians could exploit elemental vulnerabilities in the metal. Knights will rely on their sheer strength and combat prowess, and Rangers may take advantage of their sharpshooting skills. As the gears grind and steam hisses, who will emerge as the ultimate Clockwork Conqueror? Join us and witness the metallic mayhem!

Weekly Sparring Session #5

Prepare for an epic showdown within the Academy's most illustrious setting: the Hall of Wonders. Surrounded by soaring marble pillars, intricate statues capturing the essence of history's greatest heroes, and a floor that reflects like still water, combatants will spar under the watchful gaze of the ancients. Every echo of a footstep or clash of weapons will be amplified in this vast chamber of reverie. Bards may find the acoustics advantageous for their sonic spells, while the shadows cast by grand pillars could give Rangers a sneaky edge. Magicians will be inspired by the history surrounding them, potentially boosting their arcane powers, but Knights may need to be wary of the slippery marble underfoot. With each corner holding a secret or artifact, strategy will be just as crucial as strength. Witness grace, power, and strategy intertwine in the Hall of Wonders!

Weekly Sparring Session #6

For this unique sparring session, students will swap swords for brushes and spells for palettes as they engage in a creative battle of colors and canvas. Set within a sunlit atrium adorned with hanging ivy and trickling fountains, the essence of artistry fills the air. Bards, with their inherent touch of creativity and expression, have a clear advantage in capturing the ambiance and intricacies of their subjects. Knights, clad in their weighty armor, may find the finesse required for painting a tad challenging, potentially producing abstract pieces unintentionally. Beastmaster students will have the additional challenge of ensuring their animated animal companions don't get too curious around the paint pots, resulting in accidental art splatters or spilled palettes. With every brushstroke, competitors will showcase a different side of their skills, revealing vulnerability, passion, and imagination in ways the Academy has never seen before. Who will craft the masterpiece that captures the heart of the Academy?

Weekly Sparring Session #7

In the heart of an autumn-hued field, an ensemble of geometrically-perfect geodesic domes stands tall, each crafted immaculately from a rare, uniform wood. As the next sparring session dawns, combatants are enclosed within these wooden structures. The only way out? Dismantle the dome from within. As participants work to break apart their confinements, the field soon reverberates with the echoing thuds of striking and splintering wood. While Knights might use sheer strength to rupture the dome's facets, Rangers could employ precision to target weak points. The unpredictable nature of this sparring session means that once the wooden shards settle, fighters could emerge anywhere and at any time, making for dynamic and unexpected bouts of skill and wit in the midst of the autumn splendor.

Weekly Sparring Session #8

Venturing far from the familiar, the final sparring session of the quarter is set amidst the very nexus of malevolence: the darkest, most corrupted part of the forest encircling The Academy. The atmosphere here is dense with a sinister energy, and the trees seem to whisper twisted secrets. But with risk comes potential reward. The Academy's higher-ups theorize that the sheer force of magical and physical combat might pierce through the darkness and unveil hidden truths about the forest's ailment. As students clash amidst the withered flora and tainted terrain, every spell cast, every blade swung, and every note sung is imbued with the dual purpose of triumph in combat and the desperate hope of restoring the woods. This session is not just about prowess but a fervent plea to the heart of the forest to reveal its mysteries.
