Basic Properties of Matter

Experiments

Density

Using only water, oil, food coloring, 2 clear glasses, and a fork, you can create "fireworks" right in a class of water. Utilizing the property of density, drops of food coloring will slowly fall through oil, appearing as fireworks do after they have been launched.

As it turns out, hot and cold water actually don't have the same densities! Learn why in this experiment using two glasses, hot and cold water, food coloring, and a heat safe pan.

Observe the property of density using your favorite Halloween candy! With water, a mug, 5 cups, a tablespoon, a straw, a clear glass or bowl, and skittles you can create your very own rainbow in water all thanks to density.

Wonder why it feels so much easier to float when you're swimming in the ocean compared to in a pool? You can thank salt and density for that. Explore this property using water, salt, baking soda, sugar, cups, and a couple of eggs!

Density

Density is the measure of mass per unit volume, usually grams/cm^3, and measures the degree of compactness of a substance.
