A View With Watermark is a two-part work of art that interactively questions the declining self-evidence of the commons. It examines the role of privatization and individualization of public space. The first part consists of an installation at a location with panoramic views. A watermarked frame, inspired by commercial I-stock photos, distorts the unobstructed view and suggests a claimed space. Visitors can take photos of the "privatized" panorama, which confronts them with the impact of ownership on communal resources.
The second part places large watermark stickers on windows of public spaces, such as the windows of skilifts, buses and cafes. This affects the free view of what belongs to all of us.
The artwork invites reflection on the value of the commons and raises questions about ownership, accessibility and the rights to the common. This work offers a powerful message about the fragility of the commons.
