On Saturday the Library had a guess the book for PYP and MYP students at the winter fair!
The correct answers for the books were Ariel, the little Mermaid and Percy Jackson, The lightning Thief. As there were several people who guessed the correct titles, our PYP coordinator and our MYP principal drew the lucky winners of our competition. The winning students will be informed in their class and receive their rewards the coming week.
Thank you to everyone who came, bought books and participated in the quiz. Thank you for all the interesting talks with students and parents.
This display in the MYP library will make it super easy for you to find a specific book for a specific skill!
More titles will be added over the coming weeks as new books arrive!
“Samhain, (Celtic: “End of Summer”) also spelled Samain, in ancient Celtic religion, one of the most important and sinister calendar festivals of the year. At Samhain, held on November 1, the world of the gods was believed to be made visible to humankind, and the gods played many tricks on their mortal worshippers; it was a time fraught with danger, charged with fear, and full of supernatural episodes. Sacrifices and propitiations of every kind were thought to be vital, for without them the Celts believed they could not prevail over the perils of the season or counteract the activities of the deities. Samhain was an important precursor to Halloween.”
“Halloween, also called All Hallows’ Eve, takes place on 31 October. It is a time when people dress up in costumes, go trick-or-treating and carve jack-o’-lanterns from hollowed-out pumpkins. Several ancient festivals held in the autumn helped create the holiday that exists today.”

In week 15, the MYP/DP library is delighted to welcome a student from MYP3 who will be shadowing Mrs Simms, and learning some of the skills necessary to work in any library, such as cataloguing new books, and how to cover them, as well as logging books in and out of the school record system.
UNO
You will be very pleased to know there are now 3 sets of UNO cards in the library for use at break and lunch times! Everyone is very welcome to relax in the library at break, to read, play games or study.
Only two rules to remember, no shoes and no phones!
Sadly, we had to postpone this, but we will now be celebrating ISH Poetry Day in the final week of school. More details will be given in next month’s update.
MYP1 English students have been reviewing books they have read, and are producing super bookmarks which are then displayed alongside the books for all to see.
So if you are looking for a good read, why not pop in and take a look at what they have to say about these books?
Maybe write a review for a book you recently read?
We celebrated Saint Patricks Day with Irish books and a fun quiz!
Plans are now in full swing for ISH to celebrate this day. The English department has been collaborating with the library, and we now have a much wider selection of poetry on offer. Take a peep
Here is what the UN tells us about this annual event:
In celebrating World Poetry Day, UNESCO recognizes the unique ability of poetry to capture the creative spirit of the human mind.A decision to proclaim 21 March as World Poetry Day was adopted during UNESCO’s 30th session held in Paris in 1999.One of the main objectives of the Day is to support linguistic diversity through poetic expression and to offer endangered languages the opportunity to be heard within their communities.Poetry reaffirms our common humanity by revealing to us that individuals, everywhere in the world, share the same questions and feelings. Poetry is the mainstay of oral tradition and, over centuries, can communicate the innermost values of diverse cultures. The observance of World Poetry Day is also meant to encourage a return to the oral tradition of poetry recitals, to promote the teaching of poetry, to restore a dialogue between poetry and the other arts such as theatre, dance, music and painting, and to support small publishers and create an attractive image of poetry in the media, so that the art of poetry will no longer be considered an outdated form of art, but one which enables society as a whole to regain and assert its identity. If you are looking for something to watch that will get you in the mood, try watching this video, less than 10 minutes long, about traditional Bedouin chanted poetry. It’s real food for thought.

Or maybe slam poetry is your thing, so try this 18 minute TEDx for starters! When National Slam champion, Anis Mojgani challenges his audience to "come closer, come into this," he's not asking them to move closer to the stage; he's asking them to move more resolutely into their own lives. "Your smiles are simply signs of how sacred your life actually is, so step into it."

We welcomed visitors from PYP6 who are just starting their research for their end of year exhibitions (bring back fond memories, MYP1?). The bad news is our stock of books displayed for Global Goals is now seriously low, but all in a good cause! The good news is that we are replacing those temporarily with other books. Do take a chance to go over to PYP at the end of May to look at these projects if you can.
Lots of new class sets of books for MYP4 and MYP5 are now on the shelves, and we are excited to let you know that more than 50 new MYP5 and DP fiction books are on their way. From Classic novels, to graphic, comic and Manga, these books will initially be placed on the New Arrivals shelves. If you can’t wait that long and you want a sneak preview, or even to reserve a copy, here are just a few of the books on their way. Want to know the full list? Just pop in and ask Mrs Simms!
February was a busy although short month in the library (fewest days of any month plus the Sports’ Break) but still lots of activity. Many MYP students come into the library to read quietly, study or to play one of the many card and board games we have. UNO is a very popular game played at breaks, and we have ordered extra sets. Let us know if you would like any other games. We will do our best to find them!
International Day was celebrated in class and we are still looking for books written in your home language that you may be able to donate to us. All languages welcome!
We exhibited books, and invited students born in the last Year of the Pig, in 2007, to break open and eat a fortune cookie! Here are pictures of our display and our first lucky prize winner.
Welcome back to a New Year in the ISH MYP/DP Library. Out with the old, in with the new!
We are changing our displays and preparing for lots of calendar events.
The Pig is the twelfth of all zodiac animals. According to one myth, the Jade Emperor said the sequence would be decided by the order in which they arrived to his party. Pig was late because he overslept. Another story says that a wolf destroyed his house. He had to rebuild his home before he could set off. When he arrived, he was the last one and could only take twelfth place.
We are collaborating with a student who is sharing his excellent knowledge of the Chinese language and culture on a display and quiz for this celebration.
Have a look at this great website to find out some fun facts about Chinese New Year
https://chinesenewyear.net/21-things-you-didnt-know-about-chinese-new-year/
Classes will be involved in their own activities, but in preparation for this deliciously cosmopolitan day of delectable delights, we would love you to stop by and have a look at our (small, but beautifully formed) selection of fictional books written in languages other than Swedish or English.
If you cannot find many - or maybe, any - books in your home language, please let us know! We also welcome ANY books you may be able to donate to the library that are written in ANY of those languages.
As an International school, with so many students of different nationalities represented, it is good to offer books in as many languages as possible.
Although the actual day is not a school one, we will have a quiz sheet based on Irish literature, writers and events. No prizes, just for fun!
We will display a selection of poetry books and hope to host poetry readings. Again, drop in and have a chat if you are a budding poet willing to take the floor, or would like to read your favourite poem out loud.
Click on UN Global Goals to see how else the library is working with these goals.
Dictionaries in the MYP Library.
We continuously work hard to expand our collection and represent all nationalities at the school.
If you speak a different language and would like to have access to a dictionary please contact your librarian.

The ISH Library is striving to teach about and work with the United Nations Global Goals.
This new page will highlight what we currently doing to attain these goals within our local community and how we support the progress.
Many famous movies and TV-Series we watch are actually based on books. Often these screen adaptions are not exactly like the book leave out important details or completely changing the plot. Some Series are simply inspired by the books.
The TV-series Bones used Kathy Reichs character names but in the movies, Temperance Brennan is depicting the author in her profession who then writes about a "fictional character" called Kathy Reich.
The movies' Temperance Brennan is the Real Life Kathy Reichs and the movies' Kathy Reichs is the books Temperance.
Similarly not all Sherlock Holmes episodes are loosely based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle´s stories, some are made up by the movie producers.

The MYP Library would like to thank MYP 3 students for taking the initiative to fundraise and purchase some lovely new boardgames which students have requested.
The brand new MYP 1-5 Science text-books have arrived and the process of entering them into the school library system can begin.
The MYP Library currently has many health and body books on display to give students the chance to learn about the physical and mental changes they may experience during their MYP career.
The MYP Library is starting the new year off with new boardgames as well as another boardgame table in the Library.
The boardgames can be played in the library or students may loan them out to use in the atrium. There are several 2-player games as well as group games. Students are however not able to bring the boardgames home.
A maker-space is an area where students can unleash their creativity and let their imagination flow. A maker-space is any space where students can build, design and apply their ideas. This could for example be in the form of arts, electronics and Lego.
The Library hopes to in the future be able to offer these spaces for students in their break times. The Maker-space concept was received by the students with a lot of joy and many suggestions to types of spaces that the students would enjoy were given.
One space the library hopes to implement in the next year is a Lego wall where students can freely build.
At the 2017 winter fair, the library hosted a "book in a jar" quiz where students had the chance to win a beautiful copy of Cornelia Funke´s Dragon Rider. Students had to guess the full title of the shredded book in the jar. The book used was an old, broken copy of Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone (/Philosophers Stone).
Old books, that had to be taken out of the library collection due to being old, never read or simply had to be replaced because of damage were given away for free to students and parents. We strive hard to not waste the books but rather give them a second chance, such as members of community taking them home.
Students left their feedback for the library and learned about the Service as Action opportunities
Students can now play boardgames such as Chess in the library during breaktimes!
The Library was full of life as students browsed the new books and took something home for over the winter break
