There are MANY books and documentaries about Ted Bundy. Here are my thoughts on the books I've read and documentaries I've watched.
The Stranger Beside Me by Ann Rule
This is my favorite book about Ted Bundy. Ann Rule does a great job of showing who the victims were - the reader feels their loss. Ann Rule was a former police officer turned true crime writer who had an advantage other authors did not have: she knew Ted Bundy personally. In fact, they were friends. It seems strange that she could be friends with a serial killer - but she does an excellent job of showing all the sides of Ted Bundy. She does not glamorize him the way some authors (and TV movies) have. She shows both his charm that allowed him to lure his victims AND the monster who killed so many women. This is a must-read.
She's been identified by several different pseudonyms, but Elizabeth Kendall was Ted Bundy's longtime girlfriend in Seattle. She dated, and pretty much lived with, Ted Bundy for years. She has a unique perspective to the side of Ted Bundy that's different from Ted Bundy, serial killer. I always wonder, "How can someone date or be married to a serial killer and not KNOW they're a serial killer?" Elizabeth Kendall had her suspicions, and actually called the police several times because she suspected the "Ted" killing girls in the Seattle area, and later Utah, was "her" Ted! Interesting perspective, and worth the read. This book does not have many details about the murders, the forensic evidence or his victims. It focuses on Liz's perspective as his girlfriend.
Documentaries and Movies about Ted Bundy
Movie: The Stranger Beside Me - Starring Billy Campbell as Ted Bundy
I show this movie to my students. It focuses a lot on the relationship between Ann Rule and Ted Bundy, but in the context that she finds out he is not who she thinks he is. It does not gloss over his crimes and how terrible they were. I follow the movie with a documentary on Ted Bundy. My students said they preferred that order because the documentary gave them more detail, but they understood what was happening because they had already seen the movie. The pairing of the two worked well.
Watch it on: Tubi, Amazon Prime
Documentary:
Movie: The Deliberate Stranger - Starring Mark Harmon as Ted Bundy
Watch it on
Movie: Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile - Starring Zac Efron as Ted Bundy
Zac Efron makes a really good Ted Bundy, BUT....... this is not my favorite Ted Bundy movie. I think that it focuses too much on Bundy's charm and his relationships. I think the intent was to show the two sides of Bundy, and to help people understand how he drew women to him even while he was operating as a serial killer. But this movie has too much of the charm and glosses over how terrible his crimes were. I would not show this one to students.
